W artykule autor przedstawia ramy przedmiotowe socjologii pogranicza. Uważa, że przedmiotem tej socjologii jest sprawdzanie hipotezy ogólnej dotyczącej socjalizacyjnego znaczenia odpowiednio zdefiniowanego pogranicza. W odniesieniu do Polski jej przedmiotem jest sprawdzanie hipotezy, że polskie pogranicze rozumiane szerzej jest, a jego odmiany geografi czne (zachodnie, wschodnie lub południowe) i (lub) polityczne (polsko-niemieckie, polsko-czeskie, polsko-słowackie, polsko-ukraińskie, polsko-białoruskie, polsko-litewskie czy polsko-rosyjskie) są zmienną niezależną, tzn. bardzo ważną okolicznością warunkującą przebieg socjalizacji jego mieszkańców. Uważa, że zdobywanie danych sprawdzających powyższą hipotezę jest jej podstawowym zadaniem.

The framework for the subject-matter of the sociology of borderland is presented in the paper. The author is of the opinion that the subject of this sociology is the verifi cation of a general hypothesis pertaining to the socializing importance of a properly defined borderland. With reference to Poland, its subject is the verifi cation of the hypothesis that the Polish borderlands, in the broad meaning, and their geographical varieties (western, eastern or southern and/or their political varieties (Polish-German, Polish-Czech, Polish--Slovak, Polish-Ukrainian, Polish-Belorussian, Polish-Lithuanian or Polish-Russian) are an independent variable, that is a very signifi cant circumstance that affects the course of socialization of borderland inhabitants. It is considered that the fundamental objective of the sociology of borderland is the collection of data verifying the above hypothesis.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, w jakim stopniu mieszkańcy pogranicza polsko- niemieckiego wykorzystują możliwości związane z bliskością granicy z Niemcami. W artykule analizowane są dane empiryczne pochodzące z cyklicznego badania realizowanego w Instytucie Socjologii UZ: Lubuski Sondaż Społeczny. Poruszana problematyka lokuje się w obszarze zainteresowań socjologii pogranicza oraz zagadnień związanych z dyfuzją kultury.

The aim of this paper is to present the characteristic of behavior of the inhabitants of the Polish-German borderland associated with the proximity of the border with Germany. The empirical base for this study are data from longitudinal studies conducted in the Institute of Sociology (University of Zielona Gora) called Lubus Social Survey. The analyzed issues are located in the area of interest of sociology of borderlands and the diffusion of culture.

Current studies on the borderland territories suggest insufficiency of research tools, which, if applied, would improve the theoretical level of the conducted studies, particularly if that research would cover the borderlands of civilizations. Until now, the research on borderlands in Poland and elsewhere were dominated by the concepts of borderlands and trans-borderness. In my opinion, to cover the full scope of social phenomena and processes, which appear on borderland and trans-border territories, the new terms should be introduced: "borderlandness" together with the existing "borderland" and the "trans-borderland" to complement with the "trans-borderlandness". In this paper I intend to present shortly the conception of the borderland applied in my research and, on this basis, I try to develop the concept of borderlandness as well as to stress its utility in the studies of borderlands, including the borders of civilizations.

Dabartinėse paribio teritorijų studijose nepakanka tyrimo priemonių, kurios galėtų pagerinti teorinę vykdomų tyrimų kokybę, ypač tokiu atveju, jei jie apimtų ir civilizacijų paribius. Iki šiol paribio tyrimuose Lenkijoje ir kitur vyravo paribio ir užribio konceptai. Pasak autoriaus, siekiant apimti socialinių fenomenų ir procesų, vykstančių paribio ir užribio teritorijose, visumą, dera pasitelkti naujas sąvokas. Jau vartojama sąvoka "paribys" papildytina sąvoka "paribiškumas", o "užribis" - "už-ribiškumas". Straipsnyje siekiama pristatyti paribio koncepciją, kurią naudojant siekiama plėtoti paribiškumo sampratą it pabrėžti jos naudingumą paribio studijų, apimančių ir civilizacijų ribas, atžvilgiu.
