The paper provides a deeper insight into the perception of stress in police ranks. Stress is perceived as any situation or stimulus that acts on the individual load and thus jeopardize its integrity. The research is focused only on those specific situations and stimuli that are specific for police practice, especially those stressors that the policemen face daily and which may endanger them. To manage this issue it is first necessary to determine which specific situations police officers perceive as the most burdensome. With this knowledge it is then possible to figure out how to minimize as much as possible the load in given situations. In the introduction the paper therefore briefly outlines the issue and focuses on the stressors specific to the police profession. The research then reveals which of normal police activities that police face daily are perceived as the most stressful.

Professional burnout syndrome is undoubtedly another civilisation disease that affects modern societies. In May 2021 professional burnout was included within the list of the WHO International Classification of Diseases, however, not as a disease, but as an occupational syndrome significantly affecting health of an employee. However, it is worth noting that it is only from 2022 that professional burnout will have become a disease which will need to be treated. The research presented below shows that there are many factors which cause this new disease, and stress is among the main ones. Working as a teacher, which is considered one of the professions of supportive nature, means being exposed to various stress factors. One of the most dangerous effects is professional burnout which can lead, among others, to many health disorders, subjective treatment of students, and ultimately, make teachers resign from their job.

Particularly exposed - on the negative effects of stress - by a social group are representatives of high-risk occupations. Analyzing the theoretical and empirical aspects concerning the impact of stress on the functioning of people, an attempt was made to answer the question: What conclusions can be drawn in order to strengthen the welfare of members of disposable groups?

In some patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the causative agent of attack is stress (AF associated with adrenergic activity). In others, AF usually begins during relax or sleep (AF associated with vagal nerve dominance). This study aimed to investigate the individual factors associated with the adrenergic or vagal type of AF. This study included 138 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Sixty-eight patients reported that AF was frequently triggered by stress (sympathetic-type AF) and 70 patients reported that AF usually began during relaxation or sleep (vagal-type AF). Gender, age, ejection fraction, and temperament were compared across the two groups. Temperament was evaluated using the Formal Characteristics of Behaviour-Temperament Inventory. The groups differed only in temperament. Patients with sympathetic-type AF had a higher score for emotional reactivity (p = 0.002) and perseverance (p = 0.002) temperament traits and a lower score for endurance (p = 0.003) than patients with vagal-type AF and than the average in population.

A sense of purpose in life is inextricably linked with a firm conviction of exercising control over it, and having one’s priorities set straight. Health in turn, is affected by stress, by salutogenetic factors, as presented by A. Antonovsky. Disturbances of sense of purpose in life result in psychosomatic disorders. Hypothesis: there is a relevant statistical correlation between the level of sense of purpose in life and noopsychosomatic disorders. Methods: 1) Crumbaugh-Maholick Purpose-in-Life Test, 2) K. Mausch Questionnaire of Psychosomatic Ailments. Test group: 683 pedagogy students from the University of Szczecin. There is a relevant statistical correlation between the level of sense of purpose in life and psychosomatic disorders. The research results require comparison with other post-soviet countries, as well as democratic ones.

Objectives: The study investigated whether nurses' different working schedules are associated with different levels of job-relatd strain, health symptoms and behavior. No reports have been accessible in the relevant literature on the possible association between shift work and job-related strain in nurses. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at a large university hospital in North-East Italy, involving 806 nurses working in selected departments. A multilevel logistic regression was applied to assess the association between work shift conditions and selected outcomes. Results: Night shifts were associated not only with higher odds of having a high Job Demand, but also with lower odds of having a high Decision Authority and consequently with a stronger likelihood of having higher levels of Job Strain (high Job Demand score≥ 38 and Low Decision Authority). The night shift was associated with various symptoms, particularly exhaustion (p = 0.039) and gastric pain (p = 0.020). Nurses' working schedules did not affect their job satisfaction scores. Conclusions: It has been confirmed that night shifts are a risk factor for nurses' health perception and working night shifts carries a considerable degree of strain. This is a condition that hospital nursing managements need to consider carefully to avoid burnout in nursing personnel and prevent an excessive turnover in this profession, which is a recurring problem for health care organizations.

Hobfoll´s conservation of resources theory and burnout among prison service Since the 70's of the previous century, the phenomenon of professional burnout is interested in an increasing group of researchers around the world. There is a lot of empirical evidence that burnout is a serious threat to mental health and the ability of workers to work. The aim of the conducted study was to find an answer to the question of whether there is a relationship between losses and gains personal resources among prison service and determining which of the resources gained or lost remain in relation to individual components of occupational burnout. The research sample comprised 98 employees of the Prison Service from the Warmian-Masurian, Podlasie, and Pomeranian Voivodships and Mazowieckie. The following research tools were used in the study: Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS) and the Profit and Loss Self-Assessment Questionnaire (based on the theory of Stevan Hobfoll). Data analysis showed that losses of hedonistic and vital resources correlate negatively with all burnout scales, and profits with cynicism. Internal resource gains depend on exhaustion and cynicism. Family resources turned out to be in relation to cynicism. Gains of power and prestige are positively related to all dimensions of occupational burnout. Economic resource gains remain dependent on a sense of achievement.

The appearance of a child with a disability is always a source of tremendous stress in the family. This problem is particularly evident in the case of an autistic child because of its unpredictable and untypical development. Every person during their life develops certain mechanisms to deal with difficult situations. According to Lazarus and Folkman (1987), dealing with stress mainly relies on specific intellectual activities and appropriate actions to control the requirements assessed by the person as burdensome or beyond his/her current possibilities. There are many ways of dealing with stress. The most common strategies include those focused on solving the problem (SSZ), emotional overreaction (SSE) and avoidance of stress (SSU) by engaging in substitute activities (ACZ) or seeking social interaction (CSA). It is assumed that an effective way to deal with stress consists in relating the needs and capabilities of an individual. The aim of this article was to investigate the ways of dealing with stress among 130 parents of autistic children.

The subjects were 134 final-year students of Warsaw Medical University, 1st Faculty of Medicine. The purpose of the study was to measure the dominant coping strategy, moderated by positive and negative emotions, which can be important in management. The variance analysis showed that activation of negative emotions resulted in a significant rise in emotion-oriented and avoidance-oriented coping. At the same time, the level of a task-oriented strategy decreased significantly, which seems to be very important in healthcare management.

The aim of the article is to present a very important phenomenon affecting human integrity and homeostasis that is Threat Prediction Process. This process can be defined as “experiencing apprehension concerning results of potential/ actual dangers,” (Mamcarz, 2015) oscillating in terminological area of anxiety, fear, stress, restlessness. Moreover, it highlights a cognitive process distinctive for listed phenomenon’s. The process accompanied with technological and organization changes increases number of health problems affecting many populations. Hard work conditions; changing life style; or many social and political threats have influence on people’s quality of life that are even greater and more dangerous than physical and psychological factors, which, in turn, have much more consequences for human normal functioning. The present article is based on chosen case studies of a qualitative analysis of threat prediction process

Differentiation of self refers to the ability to modulate affect, maintain a clear sense of self, and balance intimacy and autonomy in significant relationships. The author tested whether differentiation mediated the relationship between marital satisfaction and stress perceived by women. The sample consisted of 220 married women. Marital satisfaction was found to be inversely correlated with perceived stress. Greater marital satisfaction also coincided with better differentiation of self (less emotional reactivity, greater I position, less emotional cutoff and fusion with others), while lower level of differentiation was significantly associated with higher feeling of stress. Differentiation of self also mediated the linkage between marital satisfaction and stress perceived by women. The results support searching hypothesis.
