In the article the author attempts to present the system approach towards sustainable consumption. The systemic analysis were carried out in relation to the idea of sustainable development and ecological crisis with the emphasis put on its reasons. The attention was drawn to properties, functions and a structure of the systems in question. The author outlined the issues related to the conception of needs and the needs generation mechanisms both in real and virtual worlds. Furthermore, he pointed out the consequences related to different ways of the consumption issues understanding and a risk for a human being arising due to the approach. Subsequently, the decision process was discussed in relation to the above mention problems and heed was paid to optimization procedures and responsibilities for the taken decisions. In this context the author discussed the moderation and economy.

Theoretical background: Sustainable development is a new widely desirable course in the economy of the 21st  century. Its goals can be met by consumers implementing a zero waste concept understood as a lifestyle that assumes the maximum reduction of household waste production.Purpose of the article: The paper sheds a light on consumer awareness of the zero waste concept among young people, who face a long consumption life, and identifis the gender role in the process of applying this concept in practice.Research methods: To achieve the research goal, a survey was carried out among consumers aged 19–24, and the original consumer zero waste sensibility scale was proposed and employed to obtain results.Main findings: The outcomes suggest that the zero waste concept is more widely known among women, who show a higher level of consumer zero waste sensibility than men.

Research background: Health and environmental concerns linked to food production and consumption have become crucial both for policy makers and for consumers for modern society. Some consumers are becoming increasingly careful about what they eat, giving value to the impacts of everyday food choices on their health and on the environment. There have been few studies that have jointly analyzed these consumption patterns and that have looked for their association. Purpose of the article: The objective of the study is to develop a Polish (PL) and Czech (Cz) young-adult consumers' segmentation based on health and environ-mental attitudes and values in food choices. The research is needed to diagnose consumption trends in this segment of the market to enable creating a market offer tailored to this group of consumers. Methods: A total of 631 students from two Universities - one in Poland (University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (323)) and on in the Czech Republic (University of South Bohemia (308)) were selected to participate in the research. The sample of students was chosen because of the importance of young-adult consumers as the participants of the market with a specified purchasing potential. The data were collected through a survey questionnaire, in which a Likert type scale was used to determine the health and environmental attitudes and values in food choices. The results obtained were analyzed statistically using Statistica 13.1 using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Varimax rotation, cluster analysis using the k-means method and ANOVA. Findings & Value added: The survey demonstrated that the students presented both health and environmental attitudes, and that their food choices were driven to a lesser extent by the environmental than by the health-related values. Results demonstrated that the two distinguished factors significantly differentiated both the Polish and the Czech students into two clusters, with the first cluster being represented by consumers presenting stronger health and environmental attitudes (PL N=58%, Cz N=48%) compared to the students from the second cluster. It adds value to recent young consumers' behavior knowledge by jointly analyzing their attitudes toward health and environmental values in food choices. These findings may be useful in developing effective educational and marketing campaigns and understanding the demand for certain products.

The author draws attention to the phenomenon of synergy in the multidimensional act of consumption, one in which the buyer takes into account the principles of sustainable development. It indicates the challenges faced by consumption in postmodern society. Sustainable development can be seen as an alternative in synergy. This is an opportunity for both present and future generations. This study points to the rather "fashionable" concept of sustainable consumption at present. Using the theory of Bauman's vision of postmodernity of Goffman's vision of social roles, the author tries to draw attention to the synergy in the optimal, conscious and responsible use of available natural resources, goods and services, which will contribute to the increase in the quality of life of contemporary and future generations.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych na potrzeby pracy doktorskiej autorki referatu pt.: Koncepcja zrównoważonej konsumpcji – problemy implementacji w Polsce. Badania stanowiły empiryczną ilustrację realizacji zasad zrównoważonej konsumpcji na przykładzie zachowań konsumpcyjnych dorosłej populacji mieszkańców województwa śląskiego. Kwestionariusz badawczy składał się z czterdziestu pytań pogrupowanych w czterech blokach tematycznych, tj.: konsumpcja żywności, konsumpcja związana z wyposażeniem i utrzymaniem mieszkania, konsumpcja związana z wykorzystaniem transportu, ogólne zagadnienia dotyczące konsumpcji.

The paper presents the results of a survey conducted for the author’s PhD dissertation:The concept of sustainable consumption - problems of implementation in Poland. The survey was an empirical illustration of the implementation of principles of sustainable consumption on the example of the consumers’ behavior – an adult population of the Silesian Voivodeship. The research questionnaire consisted of forty questions grouped in four thematic areas: food consumption, consumption associated with the equipment and maintenance of households, consumption associated with the use of transport and the general issues of consumption. The survey was an attempt to indicate some of the problems that are associated with the consumption in households - it stressed the importance of economic, regulatory and social instruments in the development of sustainable consumption and also showed the views of citizens of the Silesian Voivodeshipin this area.

The paper presents and justifies a postulate of consumer education as education of citizens in spite of the fact that the roles of consumer and citizen are sometimes seen as opposite. The right to education is one of the consumers” rights and it means providing consumers with knowledge about the particular products services and their rights and skills of using that knowledge. Consumer education as citizens means showing them the moral dimensions of consumption and creating the new patterns of consumers behaviour defined as sustainable consumption.

Consumerism of the XXI century consists in the fact that people consume material goods and services that are not supported by actual needs. It is an element of “material” side of thinking, actions of managers, entrepreneurs, which contributed to the threat of global biosphere and the survival of humanity. Excessive consumption generates waste of goods, natural resources and human labor. Additionally there is overproduction and environmental degradation. This results in the need for the development of sustainable consumption and an impact of consumers in shaping the behavior of entrepreneurs in the context of sustainable development. The aim of the author is to show the disparities that have emerged between the sustainable consumer and traditional one and to identify what influences consumerism. The object of the research is a modern consumer − a recipient of goods and services that are offered by companies on the market. This article is a result of a thorough library query clarifying the issue of today’s consumers and their market behavior

The develoment of sustainable consumption should be considered nowadays a major challenge for public policy. A number of instruments, including legal, administrative, economic and information ones are used to enhance sustainable consumption. In recent years, the development of research in the field of behavioral economics has pointed at the possibility of identifying another group of instruments, namely behavioral tools, including consumer choice architecture, so that they promote the implementation of the concept of sustainable consumption. Choice architecture is based on the use of the so-called nudging tools, which constitute a change in the context of consumer decision-making. The purpose of the study is to investigate the use of choice architecture in creating sustainable consumption by influencing the decision context of individuals and households. The paper uses the method of critical literary analysis. Its results have shown the existence of a substantial amount of empirical evidence on the applicability of choice architecture in the process of promoting sustainable consumption. On the other hand, the analysis has also indicated a number of limitations to their implementation. This, in turn, has led to the conclusion that behavioral instruments for increasing sustainable consumption (using the natural tendency of individuals in decision-making processes) can complement the traditional instruments, including direct effects.

The subject of considerations in the paper is a reflection on modern consumption. The author, in search of an answer to the question what main orientations determine consumer behaviour in the market, formulates the hypothesis that deconsumption may become a permanent trend in the development of modern consumption. In order to verify this hypothesis, consumerism along with its main styles and deconsumption as a response to excessive consumption are analysed. The author presents forms of deconsumption, i.e. sustainable consumption, green consumerism, ethical consumption, anti-consumption and consumer movements promoting such forms of consumption. In the conclusions, he points to the development potential of deconsumption manifested in a growing number of consumers who are changing their consumption habits into more socially and environmentally friendly ones.

The aim of this paper is to extract and describe recent social initiatives in food consumption and distribution in Poland and indicate their characteristics related to sustainable consumption, sharing economy and collaborative consumption and to indicate the processes, mechanisms and future development options. Food is among areas that seem to adapt to those ideas more easily which means that individual consumers seem to see value in behaving in a more responsible way. In Poland, social awareness is rather limited and responsible behavior happens on a minor scale for the moment, but more international research shows the great potential of sharing economy. Food is being wasted therefore it constitutes a good ground for changing consumption habits. The paper presents four chosen social initiatives in Poland that refer to a sustainable consumption philosophy and collaborative consumption. Those mini case studies are backed by a thorough analysis of relevant literature, theme contents on websites, and results of secondary research studies dedicated to the issues discussed in the paper. Due to the qualitative character of the study, it shall be followed by more quantitative research to allow for more general insights and conclusions.

This is an empirical study that is based on the results of questionnaire research on ecological behaviour and consumer choices shown by generation Z and their attitudes towards pro-ecological practices implemented as part of ecological policies in accommodation businesses. At the same time, an attempt was made to find out whether the implemented ideas could encourage this generation to choose places offering practices friendly to the environment and thus be a source of competitive advantage of such locations. The description of the results was preceded by an overview of past research on the issue and theoretical background on sustainable consumption. An analysis of the results showed that Generation Z in most cases tried to limit their negative impact on the environment as well as trying to apply ecological guidelines in practice. Generation Z support pro-ecological behaviour on a daily basis, however, this is mainly true when it comes to behaviour bringing financial or health-related benefits. The young approve of most pro-ecological practices in the accommodation industry but they differ in preferences and in exchange for their support, they expect financial rewards. In conclusion, this generation rates more highly accommodation facilities implementing pro-ecological practices and this translates into a greater willingness to stay at such places.

Research background: The article has addressed the issue of sustainable consumption, which is becoming increasingly important on account of the adverse social and environmental consequences caused by the development and growth of societies. Sustainable consumption encourages to make rational choices and take responsibility for one's choices. Consumers take a number of decisions every day that affect not only them, but also cause externalities. There are many studies that indicate that consumers when buying goods and services are driven by environmental and ethical considerations. Purpose of the article: Changes occurring in the environment affect consumer behavior, leading to multiplicity of attitudes and changes in consumption trends. The article has shown consumer behavior in line with the concept of sustainable development against the background of trends in consumption in Poland. Methods: The basis for the discussion in the article will be: literature studies, available empirical studies, and our own results of the survey among respondents in Lubuskie voivodship. Surveys using questionnaires were directed at 541 respondents. The number of correctly completed questionnaires was 500, and the figures contained in them were subjected to further analysis. Findings & Value added: Respondents in their purchasing choices are not guided by the influence of the consumption on the natural environment. However, in their behaviors we can notice some environmental measures, which stem from different reasons, depending on the socio-economic conditions.

The article aims to show the influence of value preferences of Polish consumers on sustainable consumption. In order to achieve this goal, a set of research hypotheses was formulated, referring to both the theory of values and the theory of consumption. Data from a representative sample of 2120 respondents participating in the Social Diagnosis survey and the International Social Survey were used to verify the hypotheses formulated in such a way. The results show that those who indicate friends, cheerfulness and freedom as the most important values in their lives are more likely to select products for sustainable development goals than other consumers.

The main finding which derives from the research on sustainable consumption discloses that although consumers’ attitudes toward the concept of sustainability are positive, individuals relatively rarely follow sustainability rules in their daily life. This phenomenon called attitude-behavior gap has not been clearly explained. Some authors, relying on Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior, seek to clarify it through the lens of rationalization techniques. The objective of this article is to describe the phenomenon of attitude-behavior gap as well as to explain the techniques of rationalization and identify them on the example of Polish consumers. This goal is achieved by presenting the results of literature analysis and introducing selected outcomes of qualitative field research.

Jednym z celów europejskiej polityki ochrony środowiska jest zrównoważona produkcja i konsumpcja (SCP –Sustainable Consumption and Production). Sustainable Consumption and Production zajmuje ważne miejsce w tzw. zielonej gospodarce (green economy), czyli takim rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczym, który w bardziej efektywny sposób realizuje cele zrównoważonego rozwoju.

The aim of the study is to present the issue of measuring sustainable consumption in the light of the latest research into sustainable development. Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is one of the objectives of EU environmental policy. SCP occupies animportant place in the so-called green economy, i.e. socio-economic development that meets the objectives of sustainability more effectively. This paper examines the available literature, in both Polish and English, on measurement of sustainable consumption. In order to assess the progress towards reaching sustainable consumption, the author uses, inter alia, the reports of the European Environment Agency (EEA), Eurostat reports and the research outcomes obtained by the Polish Central Statistical Office.

One of the determinants of the civilizational development of societies is consumerism understood as implementation of consumption of goods and services not justified by needs, without respecting social and ecological costs. In her article, the author touched the issues of the possibility to popularise consumption of Fair Trade products. An aim of the article is to define the factors affecting the propensity to buy Fair Trade products. Based on a survey carried out among Łódź consumers, she attempted to indicate the variables determining their behaviour as food products purchasers. The analysis was carried out on the basis of the probit model describing the variables affecting demand for Fair Trade products. She proved that price was the main determinant affecting their choice. Of high impact is also the respondent’s age and level of education.

The characteristic discriminant of contemporary societies, particularly in economically developed countries, is, on the one hand, the expansion of consumerism in various spheres of economic and social life, while on the other hand, it is the attempt to restrict excessive consumption. The principal aim of this paper is the description of the chosen changes in consumption in contemporary society and their economic consequences. The author searches for answers to the following question: What orientations mark out the behaviour of consumers in the market? In the search for answers to this question, the orientation towards excessive consumption that is stimulated by the ideology of consumerism and deconsumption as a protest against consumerism have been placed under analysis. In analysing the ideology of consumerism, the main styles of consumerism have been indicated as follows: consumption of pleasures, compulsive consumption and symbolic consumption. In contrast to the behaviour associated with over-consumption, the behaviour in pursuit of the restriction of the consumption of goods indirectly connected with actual needs has been described, namely sustainable consumption and anti-consumption, as well as the voluntary simplicity movement in consumption.

Zrównoważona konsumpcja: istota – formy – nabywcy

PL

Multidimensional in esse the act of consumption, if the buyer takes into account the principles of sustainable development, become a challenge - also social and political. The patterns of strong and weak sustainable consumption fulfill in different degree the ethical warrant of intergenerational justice, then their effectiveness depends on the scale of lifestyles change. Previous studies of sustainable consumption forms and consumers segments reveal polarization of purchasing decisions: proecologically or socially motivated, and an „intention-behavior gap”, hindering the prediction of market behavior. This problem can be reduced by the segmentation based on the single act of purchase analysis. The phenomenon of sustainable consumption recognition can still be described as incomplete, resulting in a number of specific problems that require further research.

Second-hand buying helps to decrease the level of production and for that reason it may be recognized as a sustainable behaviour of a consumer. The main goal of the paper is to define and recognise motivations, opinions and beliefs about the purchase of second-hand products sold in various retail trade formats and to examine whether customers are motivated by their care for the environment, the desire to escape from the consumption system or attempt to follow the principles of sustainable consumption. The research was carried out using FGI - Focus Group Interview with seven people aged 20–30, including five women and two men. The criterion for the respondent selection was whether they bought a used product in the last 12 months. The survey was conducted on 15th April 2019. Answers and their analysis have shown that sustainable consumption is not the main motivation of respondents to buy used products. The most common reason is the low price of the products. However, some responses were indirectly related to sustainable consumption.

The main purpose of this paper is to characterise Voluntary Simplicity Movement (VSM) and to describe chosen initiatives that can be perceived as its manifestation. To attain these goals we use secondary sources of information: literature and web sites. As the research methods we apply critical analysis of gathered materials and case studies that reflect the practical manifestations of VSM both abroad and in Poland. Our analyses show that initially voluntary simplicity (VS) was associated mainly with religious extremism of small communities living in isolation from the rest of the society, but over the years it gained also ecological, social and economic dimensions. Although the adoption of simple lifestyle still remains a considerable challenge (since it requires the voluntary limitation of one’s consumption and a far-reaching self-restraint), and this fact is a significant limitation of VSM development, according to our findings there are certain initiatives that can be seen as its manifestations. The main practical as well as social implication of our paper is the conclusion that the Internet seems to be a convenient tool of disseminating simplicity rules and reinforcing VSM.
