This paper is a slightly expanded version of a talk I gave at a seminar which was held to celebrate the 80th birthday of Professor Tadeusz Aleksander. In my argument, I trace the beginnings of andragogy in Poland by discussing the research pursuits of adult education scholars who founded andragogy as a discipline distinct from pedagogy, and I attempt to define the role of Prof. Aleksander in this process.
