A child’s terminal illness makes it very difficult for the father to fulfil family functions. Hospice support provided by a multidisciplinary team aims at overcoming these difficulties. The mission of a hospice is to care for both the ill child and its family. The support offered to the father of the ill child is specific and adequate to the father’s social role. It embraces the basic spheres of the father’s activity in the family and is oriented to his needs.

Chore dziecko skupia uwagę najbliższych mu osób. Jego rodzina pragnie zminimalizować jego cierpienie. Wsparcia udzielają mu również organizacje pomocowe. Skoncentrowanie uwagi na chorym może jednak spowodować, iż zaniedbane zostaną potrzeby zdrowego rodzeństwa dziecka. Wszechogarniający charakter cierpienia, które pojawia się w życiu dziecka, swym zasięgiem obejmuje również jego bliskich, dlatego wsparcie zdrowego rodzeństwa chorych dzieci stanowi jeden z podstawowych celów działalności hospicjów dziecięcych. Ich pomoc opiera się na systemowym modelu rodziny, dzięki czemu zakres działań hospicyjnych jest bardzo szeroki. Chociaż pomoc choremu dziecku jest priorytetem, nie brakuje działań, które mają chronić również jego rodzinę przed destrukcyjnym wpływem choroby. Jedną z form realizacji wsparcia zdrowego rodzeństwa jest oddziaływanie psychopedagogiczne. Ma ono na celu nie tylko zminimalizowanie negatywnego wpływu choroby dziecka, ale również przygotowanie rodzeństwa do funkcjonowania po śmierci siostry czy brata. Interdyscyplinarny charakter pomocy hospicyjnej stanowi szansę na pomyślną realizację tych założeń.

A terminally ill child is the focus of attention of its close ones. The family wants to minimise the child’s suffering. Support is also offered by helping organisations. The concentration on the ill child can lead to the situation where the needs of the healthy siblings are neglected. „The total pain” of the ill child includes its family members, therefore, supporting the ill child’s healthy siblings is one of the main goals of children’s hospices. Hospice assistance is based on a family systems theory so the scope of hospice activities is very wide. Although helping the ill child is the priority, the hospices also protect the family from the destructive influence of illness. One of the forms of support offered to the healthy siblings has a psycho-pedagogical dimension. It aims at minimising the negative effects of the child’s illness and helping the siblings to go back to normal life after the child’s death. The interdisciplinary nature of hospice assistance is the chance for successful implementation of these assumptions.
