The text is organized in two parts. The first part is an attempt to read anew the life and creativity of Janusz korczak, as it is represented in pedagogy and the public discourse. Next, by placing the postulates of korczak up against events related in the media, and laws presently in force in Poland, a noticeable lack of change in the status and condition of childhood for a great many children, is indicated. This confrontation is used to formulate the conclusion that another way of reading korczak should be brought to bear: one that recognizes with shame that the activity begun by the great Polish pedagogue so many decades ago has still not come to fruition.

Tekst prezentuje analizy zawarte w ostatnim raporcie Rzecznika Praw Dziecka dotyczącym postaw społecznych wobec przemocy w wychowaniu zatytułowanym Przemoc w wychowaniu – czas z tym skończyć! Raport Rzecznika Praw Dziecka 2017. Na tle skrótowo ukazanego dyskursu na temat znaczenia problemu kar cielesnych, artykuł ukazuje wyniki badań surveyowych oraz analizy w obrębie kilku wskaźników pokazujących poziom aprobaty zachowań przemocy w relacjach z dzieckiem, uznawanie bicia dziecka za metodę wychowawczą, świadomość prawa zakazującego kar cielesnych oraz ocenę tegoż prawa. Ukazuje również problem przemocy w wychowaniu w perspektywie deklaracji rodziców dzieci do 18 roku życia. W świetle uzyskanych wyników i analiz obraz społecznej aprobaty przemocy w wychowaniu należy uznać za problemowy i wymagający zmiany. Szczególnie wysoka aprobata dotyczy zachowań, które w dyskursie społeczno-publicznym nie są jednoznacznie klasyfikowane do kategorii przemocy wobec dziecka. Wyniki badań pokazują postawy aprobaty przemocy w wychowaniu jako zdecydowanie niekorzystny kontekst współczesnej rzeczywistości wychowawczej w Polsce sprzyjający występowaniu zachowań przemocy w codziennej praktyce wychowawczej, ale też jako czynnik ryzyka występowania zachowań przemocy zagrażających zdrowiu i życiu dziecka. Teza końcowa artykułu mówi o tym, że poprzez osłabianie społecznej aprobaty dla stosowania kar cielesnych można zmniejszać problem znęcania się nad dzieckiem.

The paper presents analysis of the last report of the Polish Ombudsman for Children on attitudes towards violence in upbringing, titled Violence in upbringing – time to end this! The Ombudsman for Children’s Report 2017 . On the background of summary of the world discourse focused on the problem of corporal punishment the paper presents the results of the survey and the analysis within several indicators that show the level of social acceptance of violent behaviors in relationship with a child, treating beating children a method of child rising, social awareness of the ban of corporal punishment and the assessment of the law. The paper presents also the problem of violence in upbringing in a perspective of parent’s declarations. In the face of the results and analysis the picture of social approval of violence in upbringing must be regarded as really problematic and needing intervention. Particularly problematic is the level of the acceptance of these behaviors, which often are not named in social and public discourse as violent. The results of the survey show attitudes of approval of violence as a definitely negative context of nowadays educational reality in Poland, the context which conduces to the existence of violent behaviors in everyday child rising practices but also as a risk factor of violence toward a child that harms to health and life. The ending statement of the paper tells about the possibility of decreasing the problem of child maltreatment by lowering the social acceptance of mild forms of violence against children.
