Making a commitment to be a mother and fulfi lling this role is a long-term process, which consists of different quality stages. One can notice an analogy between the stages of being a mother and the course of nature. This similarity concerns the outline of development: birth, adolescence, maturation, and twilight of one’s life. Like each subsequent season of the year, each stage puts new evolutionary tasks on the woman and their successful accomplishment leads to her acquisition of important skills and characteristics. The beginning of each stage of the role of a mother is marked by a change in the growth and functioning of a child.

The article is an attempt to review parental roles and to direct attention towards elementary issues relating to the fulfillment of these roles in family life. The significance of parental roles, the tasks of parenthood, as well as parents’ influence on children are addressed in the article. Parental roles, which establish the basic family subsystem, are part of the fundamental dimensions of the functioning of an adult. As a lifelong and multifaceted task, they constitute a component of an adult’s development, a wellspring of contentment and a source of joy in life. The article is demonstrative in nature, therefore, a methodological approach applied in it is the critical analysis of subject literature. The reflection resulting from the analyses relates to the statement that the system of the roles of a mother and a father, as well as the quality of their fulfillment have a decisive influence on the level of functioning of a family, primarily determining socialization and education which take place within it.

One of the fundamental social roles which are fulfilled by a woman is the role of a mother. By meeting caring and educational duties a woman fulfils herself in the maternal role which influences a number of functions fulfilled by her in adult life, as well as the process of shaping her personality. In Polish culture the role of a mother has always been appreciated and considered significant. In a traditional approach the figure of the Polish Mother was concerned with giving birth to and raising children, which gave meaning to her life. In times of socio-cultural, civilizational and economic transformations of the 20th and 21st centuries the role of a mother has undergone a fundamental change. Women have begun to exist in aspects of life which had been reserved for men. Their awareness has been changed, their independence and the sense of autonomy and personal freedom has been increased. Moreover, their professional standing has been enhanced. As a consequence, these changes have led to the shaping of a new image of the term ‘mother’. Currently young women’s decisions about motherhood are more than ever wellthought-out. Women postpone their first childbirth and decide on a progressively smaller number of offspring. A contemporary mother establishes different kinds of relationships which determine the changes in terms of educational functions. The article discusses the issues related to the changes of the role of mother. The purpose of these reflections is to answer the question of what is the view of academic youth about these changes

Jedną z zasadniczych ról społecznych, jakie spełnia kobieta to rola matki. W kulturze polskiej rola matki zawsze należała i należy do ról cenionych i ważnych. W dobie przemian społeczno-kulturowych, cywilizacyjnych i ekonomicznych XX i XXI wieku rola matki uległa zasadniczej zmianie.
