This paper re-examines two turn-of-the-century observations of Putnam and Oldenburg about the decline of social capital-generating activities, and disappearance of certain social venues. Based on a decade of multisite observations on three continents I show that a particular type of an activity that Putnam claimed was disappearing-face-to-face, tabletop gaming-is thriving, and often doing so in third-place-like venues that Oldenburg described as endangered-local cafés and clubs. I present data on the proliferation of related leisure activities, including an estimate of their longitudinal and geographical spread and popularity. I also illustrate how social capital is created in physical gaming venues, and propose a six-type classification of those venues.

The paper aims at presenting the concept of a third place and indicating how it can be applied to critical reading of travelogues. The concept of third places, presented in the ’70s by Ray Oldenburg, corresponds to a research movement searching correlation between literature and space according to the principles of the spatial turn. The application of the concept of third places seems to be of special interest during the reading of travel journals. Reactions and behavior of protagonists in third places lead to a new perspective on the person-place relation and settles a traveller in the role of a newcomer as opposed to a regular. An example of a travelogue for analysis is Tour through England by Izabela Czartoryska neé Fleming.

Tekst dotyczy polskich przestrzeni kreatywno-warsztatowych typu makerspace. Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy mogą one skutecznie pełnić funkcję miejsc trzecich, czyli przestrzeni społecznych oddzielonych od domu i miejsca pracy. Jednocześnie chciałbym wskazać, że – będąc przestrzeniami wytwarzania – same mogą współtworzyć miasto. Dodatkowym celem opracowania jest redefinicja pojęcia kreatywności w świetle badań nad przestrzeniami warsztatowymi. To istotne zwłaszcza w kontekście studiów miejskich i promowania przedsiębiorczego podejścia do miast. Tekst opiera się na wynikach ilościowo-jakościowego projektu badawczego realizowanego w wybranych makerspace’ach, fab labach i hakerspace’ach w Polsce.

This paper deals with Polish creative-workshop spaces. Its aim is to consider whether they can effectively function as third places, that is, as social spaces separated from the home and workplace. At the same time, it is also indicated that – being makerspaces – they themselves co-create the city. An additional goal of the paper is to redefine the concept of creativity in light of research on workshop spaces. This is important especially in the context of urban studies and the promotion of an entrepreneurial approach to cities. The text is based on the results of a quantitative-qualitative research project conducted in selected makerspaces, fab labs, and hackerspaces in Poland.
