The main aim of the article is to present and discuss the evolution of L2 education and research expressed in two major paradigm shifts that could be observed over the last century: from the modernist approach, through postmodernism and postmethod, to transmodernity. The article also offers an overview of new approaches and trends in L2 education and research that emerged as a result of those watershed changes, in particular: complexity theory, the ecological approach, transnational identity and translanguaging. The paper ends with a brief discussion on how these changes affected L2 researchers and educators and what implications can be grasped.

The culture of transmodernity is accompanied by a number of changes concerning religion. The secularization theory has ended in failure, the role of spirituality and religion is emphasized. Changes occasionally provoke the thesis of protestantization and pentecostalization of Christianity, leading to fragmentation and decomposition. This is accompanied by a tendency to decentralize the Catholic Church. This poses challenges to theological hermeneutics in the field of Vatican IPs reception and the reading of the signs of the times, and also requires from the Church to take an appropriate spiritual attitude and define the vision of the future.

Kulturze transmodernizmu towarzyszy szereg zmian dotyczących religii. Fiaskiem skończyła się teoria sekularyzacji, akcentuje się wielką rolę duchowości i religii. Przemiany prowokują niekiedy do stawiania tezy o protestantyzacji i pentekostalizacji chrześcijaństwa, prowadzącej do fragmentaryzacji, dekompozycji i uzielonoświątkowienia. Towarzyszy temu tendencja do decentralizacji Kościoła katolickiego. Stawia to wyzwania hermeneutyce teologicznej w dziedzinie recepcji Vaticanum II i odczytywania znaków czasu, a także wymaga od Kościoła zajęcia odpowiedniej postawy duchowej i określenia wizji przyszłości.
