Th e main objective of the article is to emphasize the importance of the spiritual development of a human being at the old age which is marked with a fear of the approaching death. Existential concerns that a human being has to face at the subsequent stage of development create an opportunity to direct one’s life towards aims that are vital at the old age. Th is, consequently, leads to the subsequent stages of maturity. Th e old age may exude wisdom thanks to which a senior is ready to face the most diffi cult challenges for himself, for other people and even for what is more than human. Accepting one’s own old age and the approaching death, a human being enters the last stage of development and thanks to the possibility of transcending, an old man may try to search for a new sense of life which is adequate to needs and values at this stage and he may approach the absolute.

The paper is a review of the habilitation monograph by Artur Fabiś published in 2018 by Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego in Krakow. In a concise, synthetic form, a discussion is undertaken around the main conceptual, theoretical and methodological premises of the research concept adopted in the paper as well as the cognitive value of analyses and interpretations derived from the collected research material. The paper also draws the attention of the readers to the original character and advantages of that publication.

Tekst jest recenzją monografii habilitacyjnej Artura Fabisia opublikowanej w 2018 r. przez Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie. W zwięzłej, syntetycznej formie podjęto dyskusję wokół przyjętych w pracy głównych kategorii pojęciowych, teoretycznych i metodologicznych przesłanek koncepcji badań, a także wartości poznawczej analiz i interpretacji wywiedzionych ze zgromadzonego materiału badawczego. Zwrócono również uwagę na oryginalny charakter i walory niniejszej publikacji.

The article discusses the issues of chosen existential worries characteristic for mature people such as: fear of death, loneliness and suffering. These are the most frequent connotations of the elderly with their own mortality. The article presents the specifics of confrontation of a human being with existential worries in their last stage of life. The text is based on classic literature of Polish and foreign gerontologists, philosophers, psychologists and pedagogues and the author’s own research.

Artykuł porusza kwestie wybranych trosk egzystencjalnych, specyficznych dla osób dojrzałych, tj. lęk przed śmiercią, samotność i cierpienie. Są to jedne z najczęściej występujących konotacji ludzi starszych z własną śmiertelnością. Przedstawiona została specyfika konfrontacji człowieka w jego ostatnim okresie życia z troskami egzystencjalnym. Tekst oparty o klasyczną literaturę polskich i zagranicznych gerontologów, filozofów, psychologów i pedagogów oraz o badania własne autora.
