The aim of this paper is to present the functional and holistic approach to translation studies. The point of departure constitute the tenets of anthropocentric translation studies laid down by F. Grucza and subsequently developed by, inter alia, S. Grucza and B.Z. Kielar who discussed them in their publications. The paper presents and discusses the holistic model of translation studies, in which the primary research object is differentiated from the secondary one, and the role of the translator is extended during the act of translation.

The article focuses on empirical research of the cognitive aspect of the translation pro­cess that provides new research possibilities arising from the rapid technological advancement. After presenting a historical overview and discussing the latest technological approaches to this kind of research, the author concentrates on the possibilities and prospects of the eye-tracking analysis in translation studies, especially as regards the sight translation process analysis. The author justifies the need for research using measurement and brain imaging technologies which will help understand the cognitive processes that occur in the translator's brain and the way that information is processed and reproduced.

The role of a translator in the translation process was defined a long time ago, yet, it is not always clear that the relationships of translation equivalence are entirely translator-depended. This means that a translator not only applies already existing equivalence relationships (potential translation equivalence), but he also creates such. The concept of translation transformation, mostly encountered in works by Russian authors, is used relatively rarely; however, it may be applied to illustrate the way a translator creates relationships of translation equivalence. It is also an instrument used to explain the phenomenon of creativity in translation and individual aspects of translator's input. Descriptions of translation transformations, present in literature, in the author's opinion, require some improvement, particularly in relation to the classification of types of translation transformations. This paper presents a new proposal for such a classification.

In this article the influence of the Postmodermism's philosophic ideas on the theory of translation is discussed. The Author used these ideas to show that the process of translation has an intertextual character and the traditional translational chain could be treated as a particular example of intertexts chain. The philosophical frame also helps to understand the translation as a dialectical game between the ontological secondariness and originality.

The aim of the article is to present the possibilities of application of eye tracking in translation studies. Thanks to the development of noninvasive methods for measuring eye motion and computer technologies witch allows to record and analyze the huge volume of data that eye movement generates, eye tracking research expands intensively, particularly reading research, marketing research, human-computer interaction. The eye tracking research results show that eyes do not move continuously along a line of text, but their movement is typically divided into fixations and saccades. The eyetracker can also measure the time of fixations and saccades and record regressions or series of fixations and sac­cades – so called scanpaths. The article discusses how this data could be used to research the transla­tion process. For the described translation studies there is chosen an optical method for measuring eye motion, in which a video based eyetracker records the movement of the eye gaze as the translator looks at the source-language text or at the target-language text during translation. The author of the article defines the research questions about translation process, which could be answered thanks to the data gathered in these studies.

Translation Problem in The Reality of Translation Teaching Translation problem plays a fundamental role in translation activities on all levels. It triggers a chain of translation activities of which the translator may be aware or unaware. The course of these actions and the procedures adopted by the translator are dependent on type of translation, on components of translation setting which exists in a particular, real translation situation, on characteristics of the translation problem, on the level of problem analysis, as well as on the cognitive predispositions of the translator. Acknowledging the fundamental role of the translation problem in the translation process and accepting the assumption that the quality of the translation is directly dependent on the steps taken by the translator with the aim of solving and properly identifying translation problems , one has to consider translation problem as a category relevant to translation teaching. From the point of view of translation teaching, it is important to determine translator’s qualities, abilities, skills, and knowledge areas that have influence on the quality of actions taken with the aim of solving translation problems effectively. The same applies to attitudes of future translators. Moreover, it is the task of translation teaching researchers to develop methods which will help future translators achieve the expected level of translation competence. This paper presents a concept which could provide a starting point for designing translation teaching curricula.

This article attempts to create a general and, out of necessecity, selective and up-to-date description of translation studies in Poland. The Author starts elaborating on the stages of the complicated development of translation studies with the presentation of facts in which translation studies has its origin. Further, the Autor describes the periodization of translation studies in the light of influence of the facts mentioned above on the development of translation studies in Poland. Selected theoretical models of translation studies as disciplines created mostly by Professor F. Grucza constitute fundamental constructional basis and signifi cant area of comparison reference. F. Grucza distinguished two types of translation studies: theoretical and applied. The former is to create descriptive and explicative knowledge and the latter – applicative knowledge. This division lead de facto to two stages of interpretation of translation reality. General description of translation studies in Poland covers also teaching in translation and interpreting which, next to the primary field of academic research, is a key component of translation studies. This makes translation studies more than just an area of applied linguistics.
