The stage of preparing a design was preceded by that of inventorying survey of the separate houses and a series of thorough studies and investigations which made it possible to work out a detailed set of outlines for each object. While preparing general conception for rearrangement of the entire complex the principle has been adopted th a t architectural solutions applied in designing of individual houses should provide a possibility to meet in the best possible manner all requirements set forth by conservators and as a result to subdue to them the fu tu re functions and technical solutions as well. To avoid difficulties in the process of designing th a t might arise from improper programmes this time a procedure has been adopted differing considerably from that usually applied. There was namely prepared a series of preliminary designs complying to the outlines given by conservators, according to which housing accommodations have been foreseen only in houses having no architectural decorations of historical character, and then suitable functions were chosen for portions characteristic of their historical and decorative values from which the housing functions have been excluded.

The architectural investigations of th a t setting were started in 1967. They form a valuable supplementation to historical knowledge acquired as a result of inquiries made in source materials th a t are being kept in archives. Where such kind of source material is not available or .inadequate architectural investigations must be considered to be the only source of historical knowledge. A thorough analysis not only enabled those carrying investigations to reconstruct the history of the separate houses, but it also revealed th e ir technical conditions forming an important factor in the furthe r course of designing work. To present results gained during investigations the author dealt in detail with data and findings which have been gathered from investigations carried out in the house numbered 19.

The houses with their frontages along Kanonicza Street are forming one of the most ancient complexes of historical buildings in Cracow. The complex as a whole may be dated as early back as to the fo urte enth- fifteenth centuries and considered as one preserving up to our day its relatively unaltered pattern. Works aimed at rehabilitation of the above mentioned complex were preceded by a wide range of many- sided studies and surveys. They provided th e designing team with a great deal of necessary knowledge as to historical values present in the separate buildings as well as th a t in the field of techniques applied, demography and even legal questions. Apart from careful and extensive archival studies and inquieries an equally wide range of surveys has been carried out by architects. These, however, were extremely difficult as the houses forming th e complex are inhabited which the fact made in many instances impossible the investigations of their interiors. Nevertheless, it is namely this good knowledge of all objects th a t makes possible the preparation of a series of appropriate designs.

From among a number of possible methods as one most appropriate has been selected th a t consisting in making of cuts covering the outer p la ste r layers in the form of network formed of perpendicular and horizontal grooves of 10 cm width with spacings of 1 m between them. To expose all possible layers the stratigraphie sounds were placed at crossings or in places where a considerable loss of polychromed layers nearest to the surface has been observed. All the above works were carried out as those preceding investigations conducted by architects but in a close co-operation with a team responsible for these latter. As a result a number of painted ornamentations have been revealed dating as far back as to Gothic-times but also some of the most modern origin.
