The paper is a translation of the article by Italian authors (R. Beliucci, E. Buzzegoli, M. Matteini A. Moles) entitled: „ Impiego di emulsioni quali supportanti di solventi in operazione di pulitura dei dip in ti" published in the catalogue „Metodo e scienza. Operativita 'e ricerca nel restauro“ , edited by Umberto Baldini, Firenze 1982/83, Sansoni Editore, pp. 261-263. The authors have discussed the emulsion obtained from bleached wax (2 parts) and distilled water (3 parts) and emulgators — stearic acid (O. I o/o c.a) and ammonia (I o/o c.a.). The emulsion is applied to dispergate solvents used for cleansing paintings. Two or more solvents, even those which do not get mixed, may be dispergated in emulsion. Emulsion delimits horizontal and vertical diffusion of solvents on the cleaned surface. The article is accompanied with a commentary note of the translator on the preparation of the emulsion and its practical use. The author of the note draws attention to the possibility of the so-called reforming prior to the removal of sparingly-soluble varnishes.
