ARCHEOLOGIA NA WIRAŻU

For more than ten years now we are witnessing a steady decline of social interest in the outcome of archaeological excavations. The reason for this situation seems to lie in an excessive demand for research, a far-going commercialisation of science, an administrative approach to archaeology, insufficient time for reflections on work methods, and the absence of an adaptation of research methods to rapidly progressing computer techniques. The nostalgic- Romantic dimension of archeology is becoming increasingly distant from dynamically developing reality. Another equally important error committed by the archaeologists is the reduced rate of publishing the results of their work and an almost total lack of popular publications. The large number of excavation proposals restrains enthusiasm for scholarly investigations, while the scientific vocabulary of written studies reduces the range of potential readers. Insufficient time and a constant quest for new tasks separate researchers from those members of the public who are interested in the outcome of archaeological studies. This small part of society continues to decrease owing to the mistakes made by the archaeologists themselves. Once it becomes reduced to a bare minimum, we shall be able to establish yet another Society of Polish Archaeologists and exchange our knowledge in the manner of stamp collectors.

For years, publishing the results of archaeological studies has given rise to multiple controversies. A rapid growth of the number of examined sites and discovered monuments has long ago exceeded the intellectual productivity of researchers. Museum storerooms are brimming with piles of boxes containing invaluable monuments without any chances for publication. The only opportunity for archaeologists to quickly issue the research results is to change the organisation of investigations and the principles of conducting work, predominantly to modernise the methods of documentation. Suitably performed and skillfully illustrated work should become, immediately after its completion, material for pertinent publications. Such an attempt had been made two years ago in Gdańsk by a team from the Institute of Archaeology at Warsaw University, while examining the area of the Dominican Centre. The two volumes have become the source of enormous satisfaction among researchers dealing with the history of Gdańsk, although they were also criticised for workshop shortcomings. At the same time, the very sense of socalled rapid material publications was questioned. The purpose of the presented text is to defend the idea of rapid publication, with the initial premise being that the fundamental duty of every archaeologist completing his excavation work is to publish its outcome before he embarks upon successive research.

The chief organiser of the International Protection of Historical Monuments Day was, in the name of the Ministry of Culture, the National Centre for the Study and Documentation of Historical Monuments, acting with the cooperation of the authorities of the City of Gdańsk, the Gdańsk Historical Museum, and the local Dominican monastery. The celebrations proper, held on 18 April 2004, were preceded by a scientific conference on “The non-material legacy of historical towns”, organised in the Town Hall of the Main Town of Gdańsk, as well as a multimedia show featured in the church of St. Nicholas : “At the sources – or on the origin of Gdańsk and the role of the Dominicans in the history of the town”. Prizes in competitions relating to the protection of historical monuments were presented by Vice-Minister of Culture Ryszard Mikliński in the Arthur Hall in Gdańsk (18 April) to the accompaniment of a concert given by the old music ensemble Capella Gedanesis.

For several years now, the development of digital techniques of registering images and improving ways of measuring space is accompanied by attempts at implementing new documentation methods. Considerable accomplishments in this particular domain belong to the Workshop of Interdisciplinary Studies at the National Center for the Study and Documentation of Historical Monuments. The foundation of the investigations conducted by this institution, and the documentation gained during their course, is composed of interdisciplinary qualities, research precision, the application of the most recent techniques of non-invasive exploration as well as computer and geodetic techniques, together with benefiting from the measurement opportunities offered by the Cyrax 2005 laser scanner. All these undertakings are translated not only into complex research processes and reliable registration, but also lead to successes which include objective documentation, a rapid presentation of the outcome, and the latter’s utilisation for the purpose of popularisation.
