The article concentrates on a small excerpt from the biography of Jan Parandowski, covering a two-year stay of the writer on the estate of the Morawscy family in Kielce Voivodeship. The article presents, using this singular example, the life of a Polish manor house during the German occupation. The mansion was crowded with refugees and displaced people, forced to deal with the wartime reality. The image of this community is dominated by the owners of the estate, a family whose tradition and ethos obligates them to take on difficult and dangerous challenges. In the face of the still-circulating incomplete, or false, information relating to the place of stay of the writer following his departure from Warsaw, the main aim of this text is to systematise the knowledge and to remove doubt surrounding this topic.

It also presents the figures of outstanding reformers of the Russian stage, whose prominence and achievement had a significant influence on the style of Polish theatre.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań dotyczących biografii Jana Parandowskiego, przeprowadzonych w ukraińskich i polskich archiwach. W pracy podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytania ściśle związane z nadal nie rozpoznanym życiorysem autora "Mitologii", szczególnie na te łączące się z lwowskim okresem jego życia. Analizie poddano szereg dokumentów instytucji kościelnych i państwowych, starano się także weryfikować wspomnienia pisarza, sięgając po relacje innych świadków. Zdeponowane w ukraińskich archiwach dokumenty pozwoliły wyjaśnić wiele kwestii, nawet te, które sam Parandowski starał się przemilczeć, a indagowany przez wcześniejszych badaczy, skutecznie mylił tropy. Ustalono mianowicie, kim byli jego rodzice, przede wszystkim ojciec, prozaik bowiem nigdy o nim nie wspominał, mimo że obaj mieszkali pod wspólnym dachem przez 25 lat. Kwerenda archiwalna połączona z eksploracją źródeł pisanych umożliwiła nie tylko rozwikłanie wątków relacji rodzinnych, ale także zinterpretowanie ich w kontekście społecznym. Starano się również dowieść, że doświadczenie wieloetniczności i wielokulturowości przedwojennego Lwowa w połączeniu z nastawioną na humanistyczne wychowanie szkołą galicyjską miało wpływ na rozwój zainteresowań przyszłego literata. Dzięki temu mało dotąd znany fragment biografii Parandowskiego staje się dostępny dla współczesnego czytelnika.

The aim of the article is a presentation of effects of research in Jan Parandowski’s biography carried out in Ukrainian and Polish archives. It is an attempt at answering the questions strictly connected with Parandowski’s still unexamined life history, especially those linked to the Lvov period of his life. The analysis scrutinizes a number of church and state documents; the writer’s memories are also verified while reaching for other witnesses’ relations. The papers preserved in Ukrainian archives allowed to explain a number of issues including such ones about which Parandowski himself remained silent or, when questioned for them, he effectively misguided the former scholars. The paper establishes, who the writer’s parents were, especially his father about whom Parandowski never mentioned though they lived under one roof for 25 years. The archive search query connected with exploration of written sources not only helped to figure out the threads of family relations, but also to interpret them in the social context. In this mode the paper also proves that the experience of the prewar Lvov multiethnicity and multiculturality coupled with the humanistic education of the Galician school exerted influence on the future writer’s development of interest. Owing to it, Parandowski’s biography’s hardly known fragment becomes accessible for the contemporary reader.
