Children of “Vulnerable Identity” Do They Have To Be Excluded? Some Reflections Based on Empirical Research

Childhood is a unique period of life, and it has a fundamental influence on human being’s process of development. Knowledge and experience gathered by a child has a great impact on his/her behaviour and relations with others. Identity(ies) of the child, especially its social aspect, is shaped through the acting process, in a specific social space. It is the key to understanding mechanisms taking place between an individual and society. Its form and shape are determined by a society as well as an individual depending on his/her position in the social structure. What are the commonalities and differences between the world of children of vulnerable identity and those who are brought up in “healthy” family systems? They form a separate social group and are present in various types of discourse. However, their social situation is different, much more difficult ‒ their life stories are complicated, and their firsthand experience is much bigger. What are their chances of being included in the mainstream? The purpose of the article is to find the answer to the question

Istotą pracy socjalnej jest troska o drugiego człowieka, jego dobro, wsparcie i pomoc w rozwiązywaniu życiowych problemów. Charakter niesienia pomocy jest jednak uzależniony od przyjętej przez daną grupę społeczną perspektywy pomagania, a co za tym idzie – uruchomienia zintegrowanego systemu wraz z jego infrastrukturą, kadrą zawodową oraz kanonem uprawnień i przywilejów. W polu pracy socjalnej z dzieckiem terminalnie chorym coraz częściej wykorzystywane jest podejście umacniania (empowerment). Jego dopełnienie stanowią dwie koncepcje: resilience, ułatwiająca zrozumienie mechanizmów pozytywnej adaptacji małego pacjenta i jego opiekunów w obliczu choroby, oraz dezintegracji pozytywnej, nastawionej na usankcjonowanie uprawnień i przywilejów dla tej grupy społecznej (chory terminalnie pacjent i jego opiekunowie), która ze względu na swoją sytuację osobistą ma ograniczone możliwości doświadczania pełni życia. Wymienione podejścia mogą być przydatne w budowaniu relacji terapeutyczno-pomocowej z dzieckiem w opiece hospicyjnej. Niemniej jednak ich stosowanie w praktyce pracy socjalnej wymaga od profesjonalistów uważności oraz umiejętnego zaangażowania samego dziecka w proces zmiany ukierunkowanej na poprawę jakości życia jego i opiekunów.

The essence of social work is to care for another person, their good, support and help in solving life problems. However, the nature of aid is dependent on the social group’s perspectives to help, and thus the launch of an integrated system with its infrastructure, professional staff and the canon of rights and privileges. In the feld of social work with a child terminally ill, empowerment is increasingly used. There are two concepts to complement it: resilience, which facilitates the understanding of the mechanisms of positive adaptation of the small patient and its carers in the face of illness, and positive disintegration, aimed at sanctioning the rights and privileges of this social group (terminal patient and their carers). The personal situation of the patient limits them to experience fullness of life. These approaches may be useful in building a therapeutic-assistance relationship with a child in hospice care. However, their use in the practice of social work requires professionals to be mindful and to engage the child in a process of change that is directed towards improving the quality of life for them and their carers. In this paper, the authors focus on the role that the support system for terminally ill children has in the reinforcement approach. In their reﬂections, they present a model of consolidation architecture developed by them, whose key pillars form the basis of social work with a person in need of support and assistance. These pillars for professionals involved in clinical social work can be a source of thought in their professional day-to-day activities.

Coraz częściej badania społeczne poświęcone są kwestii wieku, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem skrajnych etapów życia ludzkiego, to jest dzieciństwa i starości. Socjologowie w ostatnich latach wiele prac poświęcili starzeniu się i starości (Mucha, Krzyżewski). Powoli problematyka dzieciństwa uzyskuje podobne znaczenie. W naszym artykule interesują nas głębokie przemiany, jakie zaszły w dyskursie naukowym i polityce publicznej wobec dzieci i młodzieży. Kryzys demograficzny przyczynił się do uwydatnienia znaczenia najmłodszego pokolenia dla stabilnego i zrównoważonego rozwoju społecznego. Dokumentujemy przemiany, jakie zaszły w Polsce w kontekście problemów społecznych i zmian psychologicznych w okresie dzieciństwa. Wnioskujemy, że obszerne badania i liczne raporty stanowią dobrą podstawę do dalszych prac nad przeformułowaniem polityki społecznej wobec dzieci i dzieciństwa w kierunku zgodnym z aktualnymi tendencjami demograficznymi.

Increasingly, social research is devoted to the issue of age, with particular emphasis on the extreme stages of human life, i.e. childhood and old age. While sociologists in recent years have elaborated many works dedicated to aging and old age (Mucha, Krzyżewski), the issue of childhood is slowly achieving a similar meaning. In our article we examine the profound changes that have taken place in the scientific discourse and public policy towards children and young people. The demographic crisis has contributed to the emphasis on the importance of the younger generation for a stable and sustainable social development. We document the changes which have taken place in Poland in the context of social problems and psychological changes during childhood. We conclude that the growing and extensive research and numerous reports provide a good basis for further work toward reformulating social policy towards children and childhood taking into consideration current demographic trends.
