Until today, the invisible life of microbes evokes the double bind of fascination and horror. The presented analysis of Ricarda Huch’s neo-romantic novel Erinnerungen von Ludolf Ursleu dem Jüngeren draws from the theoretical framework of the ‘Ecogothic’ and takes the perspectives of literary as well as medical history to explore the strategies of narrating the microbes’ eerie border crossings between man and nature.

Unsichtbares Mikroleben generiert bis heute Faszination und Schrecken. Am Beispiel des neuromantischen Textes „Erinnerungen von Ludolf Ursleu dem Jüngeren“ von Ricarda Huch zeigt der Beitrag im Theorierahmen des ‚Ecogothic‘ und aus literatur- wie medizinhistorischer Perspektive die spezifischen Strategien der Literarisierung des unheimlichen Grenzgangs der Mikroben zwischen Mensch und Umwelt.
