The paper is concerned primarily with the pictures of two Antwerp’s painters of the sixteenth century – Jacques de Backer (ca. 1540/1545–ca. 1591/1599), and Gillis Coignet (ca. 1542–1599) – which, in my view, might have been advised by an art dealer Anthonis Palermo, (Anthonis van Palerme, 1503/1513–ca. 1589), and targeted directly to the French art market. I will argue that due to his instructions both artists followed models by those Italian artists who were associated with the French royal court of Francis I, and particularly with the Fontainebleau school. Thus, Palermo acted here as a knowledgeable patron commissioning particular works of art and at the same time as an agent of supposed customers. It should be noted that his approach perfectly corresponded with cost-cutting process innovations introduced by the sixteenth century South Netherlandish artists.
