Political activities and ideological concepts presented by the community of lay Catholics gathered around the weekly magazine Ład in the period under scrutiny are extremely interesting and at the same time important section of the history of social Catholicism in Poland. In the early 1980s the magazine was a platform for both collaboration and rivalry between Catholics with different political attitudes. The editorial board consisted of people with different ideological orientations, and the pages of the Ład weekly became a place for the presentation of many different concepts, one of which was an attempt to accentuate views and emphasise the national profile. The primary aim of the study was to clarify to what extent, in the circumstances and constraints of the time, values and principles associated with the national trend appeared in the pages of the Ład weekly. In what way and how often the national community was mentioned, how it was characterised and to what extent these themes were in line with the social teaching of the Catholic Church. As a result of the analysis, it can be concluded that national ideas appeared relatively frequently in the weekly magazine Ład in the period analysed. For the most part, these ideas were formulated in accordance with the Catholic social teaching as published in various documents, and coincided with the statements made by the then leaders of the Catholic Church. The concepts voiced became a justification for the political involvement of the community and an argument for greater activity of Catholics in the public sphere in Poland.

The subject of the analysis was the reception of liberalism in selected Polish Catholic newspapers – chosen in the context of frequently discussed differences between Polish Catholic communities. After 1989, liberalism was treated as a threat in certain Catholic communities. However, it may be assumed that the criticism concerned the liberalism understood in its stereotypical form. Liberalism was frequently and deeply criticised in “Niedziela” and “Gość Niedzielny.” It was associated with all the imperfec-tion and evil of the contemporary world. The Catholic community related to, among others, “Tygodnik Powszechny” attempted to conduct a dialogue with representative liberal thinkers, frequently emphasising the positive aspects of the most significant liber-al principles. The analysis of contemporary Polish Catholic press confirms the fact that the disputes depicted in the previous decade are still valid. Moreover, it might even be concluded that the rhetoric has sharpened and the boundaries demarcating the Catholic communities in their attitudes to liberalism have become more pronounced.

The main subject of the analysis was the activity and political concepts of lay Catholics who operated on the Polish political scene in the 1980s. This group of Catholic activists had been active in the public sphere for many years; in the 1980s, they organized themselves in a Polish Catholic-Social Union. This community was not among the most important political parties of the then political system; it was not a major factor stabilizing the system or a major source of change. Nevertheless, it did have a prominent feature – it had a parliamentary representation and participated in political practice; it also had a limited impact on political decisions. The main motive of their actions was to promote Catholic values in the public sphere, but also an attempt to create a Catholic party, in the right circumstances. Still, there is a disagreement, both among researchers and actors of the political scene of the time, about the clear-cut assessment of their politi-cal commitment. Nonetheless, it probably can be said that their attitudes are within the concept of semi-opposition and paralegal opposition, and, to some extent, in what we understand by the term of opposition of value systems.

The paper focuses on the analyses of the socio-political concepts presented in the Catholic social weekly Ład in the years 1981–1984. In the period under question, the periodical was a media platform which enabled the expression of views by lay Catholics who perceived opportunities for increasing their socio-political activity in the political reality of Poland at that time. The model of community proposed by them, as well as the way of defining the common good, were for the most part consistent with the concepts of the social teaching of the Catholic Church and conformed to the guidelines of the hierarchs of the Catholic Church in Poland – especially Primate Stefan Wyszyński. The calls to action for the common good were combined with the idea of reconciliation, dialogue, and cooperation. Accordingly, the national community was thus considered the most important community of all. It should be emphasized that these concepts were supposed to enhance the power and importance of this particualt community of Catholics in public life and to contribute to establishing their position as the most important representative of the Catholics on the political scene of the period.
