In this essay the author reflects on a monograph by Krzysztof Łęcki, Według Tukidydesa. Rozważania socjologa literatury nad ‘Wojną peloponeską’ [According to Thucydides: Reflections on the Sociological Literature about The Peloponnesian War] (2019), and seeks themes in it that extend beyond the sociology of literature. He concludes that Łęcki’s analysis convincingly adds to the body of knowledge on Thucydides’s text in philosophy and the sociology of politics. The book touches on many themes relevant to historical sociology or the sociological (and politological) understanding of rules governing the mechanisms of politics and international relations.

Marcin Gacek’s reflection on sociological commentary in this article has been inspired by the scientific achievements and sociological reflections of French sociologist Raymond Aron. In his work, Aron combines the reliability and sensitivity of description, directly related to his sociological research, with erudite style and a phenomenal sense of the social pulse characteristic of an outstanding observer who is scientifically engaged in commenting on present-day issues. The basic question that Gacek poses is, Is it possible to practice sociology while writing commentary?

Inspiracją do przedstawionej w tym artykule refleksji nad komentarzem socjologicznym jest dorobek naukowy i komentatorski francuskiego socjologa Raymonda Arona. Łączy on rzetelność i wrażliwość opisu, związanego bezpośrednio z jego badaniami socjologicznymi, ze stylem erudyty i fenomenalnym wyczuciem pulsu społecznego charakteryzującym wybitego obserwatora zaangażowanego naukowo zajmującego się komentowaniem współczesności. Podstawowym bowiem pytaniem stawianym w tym artykule jest: czy pisząc komentarze można uprawiać socjologię? Odpowiedź twierdząca na to pytanie, które jest jednocześnie jego tezą i opiera się na przekonaniu, że nie da się uprawiać socjologii nie komentując historii czy współczesności. W tej perspektywie socjologia to ściśle naukowy komentarz interpretujący dynamikę zmian otaczającego nas świata.

Zmarły w 1983 roku Raymond Aron był i pozostał ikoną socjologicznej analizy rzeczywistości politycznej. Jego dzieła naukowe, jak i komentarze są do dzisiaj przykładami mistrzowskiej oceny społeczno-ekonomicznej we Francji, Europie i na poziomie stosunków międzynarodowych. W dobie kryzysu wiarygodności nauk społecznych warto pochylić się nad metodą francuskiego socjologa, która – z perspektywy trzydziestu lat – zapewniała trafność jego spostrzeżeń naukowych, a i jemu pozwoliła zachować elitarność naukowca-intelektualisty. W polskiej socjologii odczuwalny jest brak opracowań opisujących aronowską socjologię polityki.

Raymond Aron, who died in 1983, was and remains an icon of sociological analysis of political reality. His academic work, as well as political commentaries, are considered today to be examples of an outstanding socio-economic assessment of French, European and World politics. While facing the current crisis of the credibility of social science, it is necessary to contemplate methods of analysis applied by Aron who – judging thirty years on – provided accurate observations and retained the elitism of a public intellectual. There is a lack of enhanced studies on Aron's political sociology concepts in Polish sociology.
