Old age as a natural wave of life following youth and maturity, culminates in the dynamic process of aging of people. Called the final stage of life, it is usually equated with the decline of the body’s efficiency, loss of mobility, weakened strength, reduced ability to adapt to any changes, loneliness, the necessity to use the help of others and sometimes even functioning on the margins of social life. Such an image of old age seems to be not very optimistic, the more so despite the inevitable process of aging, people of this age can also be very active in the social space and present a friendly image of old age. This article is an attempt to show how maturity youth perceive older people in their living environment. For this purpose, a short outline of the theoretical basis on old age is described, a methodological note and an analysis of the conducted research were presented, taking into account the conclusions set at the end of this article.

Starość jako naturalna fala życia następująca po młodości i dojrzałości wieńczy dynamiczny proces starzenia się osób. Nazywana końcowym etapem życia, zwykle utożsamiana jest ze spadkiem wydolności organizmu, utratą mobilności, osłabieniem sił, ograniczeniem zdolności przystosowania się do wszelkich zmian, samotnością, koniecznością korzystania z pomocy innych, a czasem nawet funkcjonowaniem na marginesie życia społecznego. Taki obraz starości wydaje się mało optymistyczny, tym bardziej że mimo nieuchronnego procesu starości osoby w tym wieku potrafią być również bardzo aktywne w przestrzeni społecznej i prezentować przyjazny obraz spokojnej starości. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą ukazania, w jaki sposób młodzież maturalna postrzega osoby starsze w środowisku swojego zamieszkania. W tym celu opisano krótki zarys teoretycznych podstaw o starości, przedstawiono notę metodologiczną oraz analizę przeprowadzonych badań z uwzględnieniem wniosków zamieszczonych w zakończeniu niniejszego artykułu.

Social work is an important issue in social life. That is why lots of scientists and researchers dedicate more time to it doing theoretical and methodological research. One of it refers to social work from the perspective of profession. In this sense, what can be expected from a social worker is professionalism in helping individuals and various social groups to function again in the society. The article shows that it is necessary to appreciate social work and the profession of a social worker who tries to help a man in need in a professional way.

The society in which today's man exists is not only difficult but also complicated. That is why many people cannot cope with personal and social problems. Many of them experience social exclusion defined as the effect of various social disabilities, due to which an individual or a group cannot fully participate in social, economical and political life of the society to which they belong. The subject of social exclusion is most of all an individual, who was excluded on his way to realize his own humanitas due to his own faults or because of improper policy of the country. The most important problems located within the area of exclusion include: disability, unemployment, homelessness, addictions, loneliness and destitution. The above mentioned areas of exclusion are characterized and the author attempts to indicate ways to help those who have become victims of exclusion. The basic institution which helps the excluded is social aid, whose first and foremost aim is improving social life. Within social aid, social workers play an important role, since as educated and competent they can have an influence on improving a person’s life. Unfortunately, the basic needs of an excluded person are not always adequately addressed. These shortcomings affect most of all the weakest groups and individuals. Due to deficiencies in social policy and its subject areas: population, family, education, housing, income sharing, social security, employment - there occurs erosion of the weakest links of the social system. Thus there is a need of opening the policy of the state towards various social problems which are not always the fault of an individual but of the system, to which he/she belongs.

Społeczeństwo, w którym egzystuje współczesny człowiek, jest nie tyle trudne, ile bardzo złożone. Dlatego też wielu ludzi nie radzi sobie z różnymi problemami natury osobistej i społecznej. Wielu z nich doświadcza wykluczenia społecznego definiowanego jako efekt różnego rodzaju upośledzeń społecznych, wobec czego jednostka lub grupa nie może w pełni uczestniczyć w życiu gospodarczym, społecznym, ekonomicznym i politycznym społeczeństwa, do którego należy. Podmiotem wykluczenia społecznego jest przede wszystkim jednostka, która na drodze realizacji własnego humanitas została wykluczona w sposób przez siebie zawiniony lub doznała wykluczenia z powodu niewłaściwej polityki państwa. Do najważniejszych problemów lokujących się w obrębie wykluczenia autor zalicza: niepełnosprawność, bezrobocie, bezdomność, uzależnienia, samotność i ubóstwo. Scharakteryzowano przywołane powyżej obszary wykluczenia oraz podjęto próbę wskazania sposobów pomocy jednostkom, które stały się ofiarami wykluczenia. Podstawową instytucją pomagającą tym osobom jest pomoc społeczna, której pierwszym i podstawowym celem jest ulepszanie życia społecznego. Ważne miejsce zajmują w niej pracownicy socjalni, którzy jako jednostki wykształcone i kompetentne mogą wpływać na lepsze życie człowieka. Niestety, współcześnie nie zawsze w wystarczający sposób zaspokajane są podstawowe potrzeby zagubionych osób. Najsilniej dotykają one grupy i jednostki najsłabsze. Wskutek owych braków w polityce społecznej oraz w jej przedmiotowych zakresach: w polityce ludnościowej, rodzinnej, edukacyjnej, mieszkaniowej, polityce podziału dochodu, zabezpieczenia społecznego, zatrudnienia, następuje erozja najsłabszych ogniw systemu społecznego. Konieczne zatem wydaje się otwarcie polityki państwa na różne problemy społeczne, nie zawsze zawinione przez jednostkę, ale przez system, w którym się ona znalazła.

Then the author analyses the organisational structure of the institution of social help in which a social worker is of significant importance. Besides, the author shows also stages of management in social help. In the further part of the article the author describes the function of a social worker and their tasks in the context of modern social conditioning. Besides he describes the structure of organization of social help with the cooperation of a social worker and family assistant.

Social changes of today’s reality, their fierceness and rapidity are becoming a special sign of our Times. Undoubtedly, family is one of the most important places where they can be seen. There must be no doubt that family is a kind of group in which one can see as in a focus all problems and difficulties. These problems include divorce, migration and growing old. The analysis of chosen socio-cultural problems show the need of prevention in a family, it needs to be accompanied and supported in various periods of life. This task should be especially accomplished through proper pro-family policy of the state, whose duty is not only taking care of a family but also support it.

Przemiany współczesnej rzeczywistości, ich gwałtowność i dynamizm stają się szczególnym znakiem naszych czasów. Oczywiście jednych z najistotniejszych miejsc, w którym można je dostrzec jest bez wątpienia rodzina. Chyba nie ma wątpliwości, iż właśnie rodzina jest taką grupą w której jak w „soczewce” zarysowują się wszelkie problemy i trudności. Do problemów tych należy zaliczyć: rozwód, migracje i proces starości.Analiza wybranych problemów społeczno kulturowych wskazuje, iż potrzeba dzisiaj profilaktyki w rodzinie, potrzeba jej towarzyszyć i wspierać ją na różnych odcinakach życia. Zadanie to szczególnie powierzone jest prowadzeniu właściwej polityki rodzinnej przez państwo, którego obowiązkiem jest nie tylko troszczyć się o rodzinę, ale przede wszystkim wspierać ją.

Love and truth are the two attributes of a well-functioning society. Unfortunately, these two basic values are often being devalued in the modern world. The reason for this is the lack of a sense of justice. Especially because in the social and cultural context the truth is often relativized. In this context it is worth analysing the Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Caritas in Veritate , in which one should pay attention to a construction of the society in which today’s human person lives.Love and truth are the two attributes of a good society in with each human is equipped. From the very beginning, the human person is called to be directed by love and truth. He or she is called to this truth by his or her Christian life and ontic dimension of his or her nature. Society without love and truth will be threatened with agony, because it will not only stop developing but also its wrongly understood economical status will become a road to nowhere. That is why we should definitely accept the thesis that homo economicus must convert into homo religiosus in the name of love and truth, so that society will be good. Let love in truth leads to a good society, which the whole world is for us.

The article deals with the educational role of seniors (grandparents) in the family. The aim is to show a specific educative and socializing role in the areas of family upbringing, cultural and social education, religious-moral upbringing and analysis of their rationalized intellectual capital as the wisdom of an old man. The analysis shows that the roles of seniors still have an important educative impact on adolescent grandchildren. Good contacts with grandparents teach teens love and care for each other, learn about family history, traditions and faith at home. They are still the guards of collective memory, family ties, chronicles of history, wisdom of faith, morality and cultural heritage. It is noticed, however, that advice given to the young generation is not for everyone a universal recipe for a happy life.

Artykuł podejmuje tematykę wychowawczej roli seniorów(dziadków) w rodzinie. Celem jest ukazanie konkretnie wychowawczej i socjalizacyjnej roli w obszarach: wychowanie w rodzinie, wychowanie kulturowe, wychowanie społeczne, wychowanie religijno-moralne oraz analiza ich kapitału intelektualnego racjonalizowanego, jako mądrość starca. Z analizy wynika, że role seniorów nadal mają ważny wpływ wychowawczy na dorastających wnuków. Dobre kontakty z dziadkami uczą nastolatków miłości i troski o drugiego człowieka, poznania historii rodziny, tradycji i wiary w domu. Wciąż są jeszcze strażnikami: pamięci zbiorowej, więzi rodzinnych, kronikarzami historii, mądrością wiary, moralności i dziedzictwa kulturowego. Zauważa się jednak, iż rady udzielane młodemu pokoleniu nie dla wszystkich stanowią uniwersalną receptę na szczęśliwe życie.

Rodzina to nie tylko podstawowa i pierwotna komórka społeczeństwa, ale także grupa utrzymująca jego biologiczną ciągłość. Nie ma społeczeństwa bez rodziny i rodziny bez społeczeństwa. Te dwa byty uzupełniają się. Można stwierdzić, że społeczeństwo będzie tym, czym jest rodzina, w której rodzi się i rozwija baza społeczeństwa – człowiek. Dlatego też rodzina jest odpowiedzialna za kształtowanie i wypełnianie podstawowych funkcji będąc fundamentem życia społecznego. Jan Paweł II stwierdza, że przyszłość ludzkości zależy od rodziny. Jest zatem rzeczą ważną, aby każdy człowiek dobrej woli zaangażował się w sprawę ratowania i popierania wartości i potrzeb rodziny.

Family is not only a basic and primary cell of a society, it is also a group which holds its biological wholeness. There is no society without a family and there is no family without a society. These two entities complement one another internally and make an organism whose aim is to provide proper functioning of family in a society. Each of us lives in a family and creates an own group together with it. Subsequently, family groups create whole society, in which we live. There is a very close relation between family and society. Thus we can say that society will be what family is. It is there where the basis of society – a man – is born and develops. That is why family is responsible for shaping and fullling basic functions being a foundation of social life. John Paul II claims, that the future of humanity goes through family! It is then necessary and urgent for everyone to get involved voluntarily into the matter of saving and supporting family values and needs (FC, 57).

Family is not only a basic and original cell of a society, but also a group sustaining its biological continuity. There is no society without a family as well as a family without society. These two entities complement each other internally and they create an organism aimed at proper functioning of the family within a society. In this context family is a union of life and love, which satisfies basic human needs. Unfortunately lately the family has been experiencing numerous difficulties connected with its functioning. To sustain itself at a certain economic level its members are forced to emigrate, due to lack of work in their own country. Migration brings both wanted and unwanted results, but there are many more of the latter. That is why today's family needs help - support from other institutions: the state, the school and the Church. This duty is especially to be held by the state, whose task is to support the family e.g. by creating new workplaces. We need to remember that man „is not (...) only a product of economic conditions but as a living creature needs a dignified life and self-realization in their own country".

Rodzina to nie tylko podstawowa komórką społeczeństwa, ale także grupa podtrzymując ciągłość biologiczną. Nie ma społeczeństwa bez rodziny, a także rodziny bez społeczeństwa. Te dwie jednostki uzupełniają się wzajemnie wewnątrz i tworzą organizm mający na celu właściwego funkcjonowania rodziny w społeczeństwie. Rodzina jest związkiem życia i miłości, która spełnia podstawowe potrzeby człowieka. Niestety ostatnio rodzina przeżywa wiele trudności związanych z jej funkcjonowaniem. Aby utrzymać się na pewnym poziomie gospodarczym jej członkowie są zmuszeni do emigracji z powodu braku pracy we własnym kraju. Migracja przynosi zarówno chciane i niechciane rezultaty, ale jest o wiele więcej skutków negatywnych. Dlatego dzisiejsza rodzina potrzebuje pomocy - wsparcia ze strony innych instytucji: państwa, szkoły i Kościoła. Obowiązek ten powinien być szczególnie wypełniany przez państwo, którego zadaniem jest wspieranie rodziny np poprzez tworzenie nowych miejsc pracy. Musimy pamiętać, że człowiek "nie jest (...) tylko produktem warunków ekonomicznych, ale jako żywa istota potrzebuje godnego życia i samorealizacji we własnym kraju".

Man is a free being and possesses his dignity. Thus each act directed against man’s personal freedom is understood as an act of violence. Making a man do something contrary to his will is also violence. The analysis of statistics concerning family violence shows that this problem has been increasing over the last few years. Data showing the number of interventions connected directly with family violence done by the police indicate clearly that this number is growing yearly. Violence is a phenomenon really alarming today’s family, its scale is expanding and it concerns generally women and children. All organisations should start acting to prevent this phenomenon. These organisations include: courts, the police, social help offices and other societies. We have only one life and it should be protected and lived in dignity. Unfortunately, family home, which should be full of warmth, love and tolerance is sometimes a place of pain, suffering and tragedy. Its is good that social workers not only diagnose this problem but also help victims of family violence. In this way individuals, who suffer because of the problem do not feel alienated as there is someone who gives them a helping hand.

In the context of the many challenges and threats of the modern civilization the family seems to need more and more support and assistance that will help it restore social functioning and awaken hope for a better tomorrow. In the sectors of social life there are many aid institutions, but among them increasingly important in giving help is social work which, acting at different levels, tries to help people overcome problems in the personal, family and social spheres. A special role is played by the social worker as a professional in the field of activities for the family. His activities include conducting therapy, counseling for families in general and counseling for children, young people and older people in the family.
