In the article issues are tackled connected with establishing the authorship and correctness of Józef Czechowicz’s texts. Typescripts of his poems that he had left unsigned, and that are now among the signed manuscripts and typescripts, gave a lot of trouble to editors of the poet’s works. A lack of his signature caused hesitations as to the authorship; however, sometimes there was a possibility of completely ruling out the authorship of the Lublin poet. The problem of authorship is also complicated because of other poets’ poems that Czechowicz copied himself. New prospects connected with establishing the authorship of the texts are offered by reaching to the poet’s surviving original poems. Owing to this method – in several cases – it was possible to reconstruct their correct shape.

Jednak zanim został opublikowany, przeszedł różnego rodzaju modyfikacje (m.in. stylistyczne i kompozycyjne).

The Hoover Institution at Stanford University holds the largest collection of manuscripts by Leopold Tyrmand in the world. An analysis of the materials stored at the Hoover Institution provides grounds for dissipating some doubts about the authenticity of his Diary 1954. Today, we are certain that Tyrmand’s work is an original diary that had been written in Poland. However, before it was published, it underwent various modifications (in terms of style, composition, and material). A very important issue is the kind of censorship made by the publishing house. The reading of Tyrmand’s letters proves that not all of the modifications were in accordance with his will, and that not all of them were initiated by him. Moreover, readers of the article will learn some facts about Tyrmand’s creative process and different variants of his works.

The article presents issues related to the publishing fate of the entire literary output of Stanisław Grzesiuk. It consists of three autobiographical novels: Pięć lat kacetu [Five years of a camp], Boso, ale w ostrogach [Barefoot, but in spurs] and Na marginesie życia [On the Margins of Life]. The editions that were published during the writer’s lifetime were subjected to various types of interference. The most important factor that influenced the final form of the text was institutional censorship. In addition, the author changed his works under the pressure of the publisher, the family and as part of the implementation of the court settlement. The editors of the new edition of Grzesiuk’s works, which was published in 2018 by the Pruszyński i S-ka publishing house, made an attempt to reconstruct texts from before non-author’s changes. The comparison of these editions with the first editions and manuscripts proves that the publishing house has made many incomprehensible decisions that may have an impact on the incorrect reception of the author’s message.

The complex and mysterious story of Bolesław Leśmian’s drama Vasilij Buslaev has led some scholars to doubt the very existence of the piece. The correspondence of Maksim Gor’kij may help to solve the mystery. The authoritative Russian writer acted as a reviewer when the decision to accept or reject this play for print was to be taken. Once Gor’kij had read the manuscript, the piece was returned to the author, who was informed that it would not be published. Unfortunately, its fate thereafter remains unknown.

Edward Stachura spent three years of his life in Lublin. He enrolled at the Catholic University of Lublin in 1957, majoring in French Philology. In 1960 he moved to Warsaw and started coressodnance to Maria Bechczyc-Rudnicka who was a chief editor in local literary newspaper “Kamena”. Stachura published there some of his works. The letters which are stored in Hieronim Łopaciński Public Library in Lublin give us some information about writer’s life which he used to spend “in road” nad his works sent as attachments. We have letters of Stachura but not of Bechczyc-Rudnicka because at the end of his life he decided to burn all letters and photos directed to him. Thats why editors could not collect any dialog of correspondance. The letters have been read from the handwritten manuscripts, typescripts and edited (the language of the letters has not been changed). The letters appear in print for the very first time.

The article refers to Boleslaw Lesmian’s manuscripts which in 1944 the poet’s wife and daughter took away from Poland. Following a long peregrination, the materials were found in the collection of Harry Ransom Center in Austin (USA). Attempts to raise the Polish authorities interest in them failed, and thus the manuscripts stayed abroad and have for many years lacked scientific research. The author of the text focuses on the benefits of a philological analysis of the survived manuscripts, which reveals not only the way Lesmian perfected his texts but also their shape being the closest to the author’s intention.
