Bednár and Uher’s work from the sixties can be regarded as a testimony about a period conditioned by totalitarian ideology and about a man who is confronted with turning moments in history. He increases his human value “only” by life, by the moral value choice, not by submitting to the norms of the system. That is why the screenplay (1968) and the film Three Daughters (1967) are targeted against totalitarianism. The contemporary communist ideology, which “writes the history” with language as an example of socio-cultural pressure, by its symbols as models for reality, is confronted with character personalities of the thematic historical section they have formed to the extent that they have different attitudes within individual discourses. In the story of Three Daughters the heroine defends her father and she beats “culture of power” only in the perspective.

The paper deals with Shaun Tan ́s picture book Rules of Summer (2013, in Czech – Pravidla léta, 2014). The book may be included in literature "from interface", therefore in the context of literature for children and youth, but also in literature for adult recipients. The literary text is semantically intensified with illustrations, because "contents" of knowledge that are received by central characters are represented by brilliant images of emotional memory and subconscious of the boy. In his book the author shows the peripheral areas and segments (road, factory, the building with tanks, junkyard, etc.) and subjects (boys, mechanical beings). He chooses forgotten spaces (buildings), summer vacation time as the time for releasing imagination and tells about childhood and child, about the power of friendship through the symbolic meaning of space and time, extraordinary storylines and objects that are enriched with the imaginative aspect. As the name of Tan's picture book implies, the author has specified the time during which the rules of friendship are defined as an elemental human bond at the "periphery" of the company or in the industrialized world. Selected artistic text as a problem of interpretation and an object of art theory reflection can become an aesthetic education initiative.

In the paper we identify and focus on literary reflection of the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy in the literature for children and youth in the pre-artistic, or more narrowly, Matica period. We consider the works from the context of (non-intentional → intentional) literature for children and youth, which are/form part of literature of the Matica period connected with the foundation and activity of Matica slovenská. In terms of motifs and themes, the selected poetic texts from the investigated works are connected with the life and work of apostles Cyril and Methodius or emphasize the importance of their mission in the Great Moravian environment to the Slovak nation. We focus on Ján Levoslav Bella’s (Poludničan’s) poem Ku vzkrieseniu Cyrilla (On Cyril’s Resurrection), published in Cyril a Method – Katolícke Noviny pre Cirkev a Dom (Cyril and Methodius - Catholic News for Church and Home), a period newspaper, and on poems that can be classified as important poetic works from the context of literature for children and youth in the Matica years. These include the collection by Ján Levoslav Bella, Andrej Method Čerňanský and Janko Slávoľub Kršák Jarnie kvety (1863, Spring Flowers), which contain poems Lipa (Linden), Kde ja bývam? (Where do I reside?); and František Otto Matzenauer’s anthology Malý rečník (1873, Little Speaker), which contain poems by J. E. Dobrucký Vlasť (Homeland), J. Mičátek Oj Slovensko! (Oh Slovakia!), M. Pohronský Žiaľ nad Devínom (Sorrow above Devín) and the national song Nitra.

The study focuses on the Cyrillo-Methodian references in literature for children and young adults of the pre-artistic period. The works are studied within the context of (non-intentional → intentional) literature for children and young adults which are part of Enlightenment educational literature and literature of the Matica Slovenská period, seeking the thematic connections with the life and work of missionaries Cyril and Methodius and finding out how the editors of the works connected the texts with the Great Moravian period (for example in note-taking apparatus). The most important works of Enlightenment educational literature are studied (Čítanka, Národnie spievanky by Ján Kollár) and literature for children and young adults of the Matica Slovenská period (Slovenská čítanka by Emil Černý). Literature for children and young adult of the Štúr period is also considered, since according to O. Sliacky (2013), the members of the Štúr’s circle authorized Emil Černý to arrange a literary anthology which contained literary texts from the Romantic period.
