This paper is dealing with the economic analysis of the consequences of three selected doomsday scenarios that were to take place on the 21st of December 2012. Although most of the devastating scenarios are not of any interest for the economists, since the complete extinction of human race would not leave any subjects for observation and studying, we were able to identify three major scenarios: a) collision with the parallel universe and opening of passages or wormholes, b) discovery of telepathic abilities in humans, and c) unleashing the power of psychokinesis in humans. All three scenarios are analyzed and their implications are described for the world economic relations and global trade.

With the growing importance of international migration in today’s world, new threats that include international terrorism and espionage (including cyberespionage) are also emerging. With regard to the above, it becomes important to run intelligent surveillance of the open source data that circle the World Wide Web. This editorial poses some important questions regarding the use of intelligent analysis of semi-structured data from the open sources for keeping track of international migrants and their remittances. The important discussion that arises here is whether it is appropriate to dig for digital information for the sake of national security of Western democracies.

This paper is devoted to the modeling of power markets and the generators’ strategic behavior, and to the application of market power strategies, in particular. The generator’s market power is its ability to influence the price of the offer and sale conditions in the power market without a reaction from competitors. The human factor leads to irrational features in the decision-making. That fact does not allow us to describe the behavior of market agents in the form of the optimization problem. So agent-based modeling of the complex economic systems is being actively developed now.

In this paper we are investigating the question of technical and economic efficiency of coal-hybrid power plants construction. We are considering a combined-cycle gas turbine plant, in which combustion heat of the coal is used to provide the necessary initial temperature in the gas cycle and before the steam turbine while the hydrogen fuel is used for intermediate steam superheating. This technical solution allows to increase significantly power and heat generation efficiency but also raises the issue of the most effective way of producing hydrogen. As the research results revealed, there are large scale production and row material bases available in Russia, therefore the question deserves further investigations.

In times of resource depletion, global ecological crisis, intensive scientific and technical development, institutional changes the problem of providing a sustainable development of economy and society becomes more and more demanded and actual. The appearance of conception of sustainable development in the middle of 20th century lead to interpretation of society progress not as an economic growth, but it is necessary to consider economics as a national economy tool, which allow to compound and harmonize economic and social development with nature sources exploitation. For rather short time the theory of a sustainable development became not only one of the most studied and quickly developing economic theories, but also became a part of many state and international documents as the basic concept of providing a sustainable development of economy of the developed countries. Our paper describes the evolution of the concept of sustainable development. Moreover, it analyzes the basic indicators and models of sustainable development and assesses the possibility of applying the concept of sustainable development at the enterprise level.

The purpose of this article was to substantiate the relevance and perspectivity of construction and operation of thermal power plants working on the combined cycle in Russia. This paper provides an overview of the current state of the technology. Its capabilities were disclosed and a global trend to use combined cycle was revealed. Special attention was paid to Russia's abilities to self-construction of such generating capacity. The authors examined the documents adopted by the Ministry of Energy of Russia, according to which the development of the CCGT is a top government priority modernization of the energy sector of the country. The article describes the structure of the current consumption of energy resources and gives the prediction of its changes until 2030. On the basis of the data it was concluded that there is an additional need for CCGT in Russia. General advantages of combined cycle power plants in comparison with classical schemes of power generation in terms of technical and economic efficiency were disclosed. The paper reflects the problems of investment attractiveness of CCGT construction projects in Russia. The cause of weak interest of investors to such projects was identified.
