This article deals with the Azorean diaspora to Rio Grande do Sul – a state located in the extreme south of Brazil, – fostered by the Treaty of Madrid of 1750 and its intentions. It analyzes the situation of insular families who left in search for the promised land – the dreamed properties – and the challenges they were left with until they belatedly received the properties, in a territory convulsed by intermittent wars between the two Iberian crowns. It identifies the role that the Azoreans played in the process of incorporation of the southern territory into Portuguese rule.
