The media influence politics to such an extent that they are often referred to as the fourth power and the entity that defines the field of politics. Since they are the audience's main source of information they can create reality. The manipulative techniques used by the mass media are particularly evident during election campaigns, as they then act as the main intermediary between voters and politicians. Due to the fact that individual representatives are competing in presidential elections, the manipulative techniques used by the media can be accurately characterized.

Media oddziałują na politykę w takim stopniu, że często są określane czwartą władzą oraz podmiotem, który definiuje pole polityki. Jako, że stanowią główne źródło informacji odbiorców to potrafią kreować rzeczywistość. Techniki manipulacyjne wykorzystywane przez mass media są szczególnie widoczne w trakcie trwania kampanii wyborczych, ponieważ pełnią wtedy rolę głównego pośrednika między wyborcami a politykami. Ze względu na to, że w wyborach prezydenckich rywalizują ze sobą jednostkowi przedstawiciele, można dokładnie scharakteryzować użyte przez media techniki manipulacyjne.
