The author of the article, Walentyna Sobol, analyzes documentary and literary books from Morocco and two émigré writers about Morocco. These are “Spells of Morocco” – the Ukrainian forgotten author Sofia Jabłońska (1907–1971) and “Moon in Tears” – contemporary writer Morocco Ouard Saillo, born in Morocco in 1974. Ouardy Saillo’s book, decorated with photos of the Saillo family, was written in German. For the first time is published in Polish translated by Barbara Otwinowska (published in 2005 in Warsaw). In 2018, in Kiev were published 107 photographs of Sofia Jabłońska from her times of work and travel around the world, including Morocco. The goal of the article is to reveal the phenomenon of persistence and bravery of both writers, different, but sometimes very similar intertextuality . The narrative of the documents is examined using a methodological approach, especially in terms of: “intertextuality is a study of the memory of literature” (Tadeusz Sławek). Using modern research in anthropology, including the lexicon of the culture of memory “Modi memorandi”, the author of the article investigates the phenomenon of intertextuality in the narratives of Jabłońska and Saillo. This comparative study of the autobiographical works of Ukrainian and Moroccan writers in Poland not only reveals the conclusions, but also opens wide research perspectives.

Valentyna Sobol’s review entitled Verba wovent, exempla trahunt analyses the latest work of professor Mykola Zhulinsky My Second World War – a documentary „novel-chronicle in voices” (Жулинський Микола. Моя друга світова. Роман-хроніка в голосах, Видавництво «Ярославів Вал», Київ 2016, 416 сс.). The reviewer pays special attention to book’s complex structure, however it consists of just two, albeit extensive chapters „A war on us against all” (Війна з нами проти всіх) and „A war for ourselves with everybody” (Війна за себе з усіма). These chapters and their titles are keys that unlock unknown charters of Ukrainian history of 1939-1945, but they do not give definitive answers to difficult questions. V. Sobol analyses tragic experiences of main personages of the novel-chronicle and its multiple (real-life) secondary heroes – all set against the backdrop of the history of East-European totalitarian societies of the 20th century. Of special significance for the novel are the rules the narrator applies to portray its people and his skillful ability to reveal their idiosyncratic and universal features. Zhulinsky’s book overwhelms the reader and gives it a powerful stimulus to its own thoughts and judgements.

The article analyses the manuscript of Philip Orlik’s diary (1672–1742). The Ukrainian hetman was writing it for twelve years, between 1720 and 1732. The author’s focus is Orlik’s autobiography. It is a very important part of the diary and is related to the exile period of his life. The diarist had given that chapter a separate title – “Pro memoria. Na cześć i chwałę Bogu w Trojcy Świętej jedynemu Amen” [“Pro Memoria. For the Glory of God in Holy Trinity United Amen”]. The purpose of the article is to investigate the anthropology of family memory in the diary as a pledge of the author’s endurance. Orlik perceived the diary as an interlocutor, so there is a peculiar, emotionally sensitive link between the diary and the diarist. The diary is characterised by persuasiveness. In order to illustrate it, the author of the article provides quotations from the diary without translation. The original language of Orlik’s manuscript is the Old Polish language inlaid with Latin. The diarist had put down into the diary copies of the most important letters. He wrote the letters in French and Latin. The Polish language was used exclusively in his correspondence with King Stanislav. The author analyses the autobiographical note in the context of the diary genre, defining it as a model of baroque autobiography that resonates throughout the text of the diary.

This ar ticle aims at presenting the fate of two brilliant musicians and composers – Alexander Koshitsa (1875–1944) and Sergei Rachmaninov (1873–1943). The author of this article traces historical patterns of the tragedy of these genii who were forced to emigrate, could not return to their homeland but made it famous through their phenomenal talent shown in the world. The article analyzes materials presented in the archives of Alexander and Tatiana Koshitziv in Winnipeg, as well as the latest scientifi c research. The author concludes that Alexander Koshits and his choir had a mission of propagating Ukrainian songs and spiritual music in Europe and the USA.

The presentation of the first and the second volume of the Encyclopedia took place on July 11th 2017 in Lvov. This unique publication offers a comprehensive information about the first scientific organisation in Ukraine. Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society was established in 1892, long before Ukrainian Academy of Sciences has been founded (1918). In 1940 Shevchenko Scientific Society was banned by the Soviet regime, although it continued to function underground. In 1947 it renew its operations abroad. It was fully reactivated on October 21st 1989. Currently Shevchenko Scientific Society has ca. 1700 members. In the past, among its members were influential foreign scientists like Albert Einstein, Aleksander Brückner, Tomáš Masaryk, Max Planck and others. On June 12th 2017 during a meeting in Kiev with the President of Shevchenko Scientific Society in America, prof. George Grabovich, were discussed the perspectives of future cooperation between Shevchenko Scientific Society and its regional offices.
