In the nineteenth century, the Russian authorities carried out a large-scale campaign to develop and legalize territorial coats of arms, including city coats of arms. This action consisted in searching for heraldic sources and developing coats of arms based on them. Other factors were the state symbolism and the current characteristics of the town and the activities of its inhabitants. In the Kingdom of Poland, the political and modern-ist factors began to dominate much faster and more clearly. The article shows various shades of the heraldic undertaking on the example of the designs of coats of arms for Radzyń and Międzyrzec.

W XIX wieku władze rosyjskie przeprowadziły szeroko zakrojoną akcję opracowania i legalizacji herbów terytorialnych a w tym i miejskich. Akcja ta polegała na poszukiwaniu źródeł heraldycznych i opracowaniu w dużej mierze na ich podstawie herbów. Innymi czynnikami była symbolika państwowa i aktualne charakterystyki miejscowości i zajęć mieszkańców. W Królestwie Polskim dużo szybciej i wyraźniej zaczął dominować czynnik polityczny i modernistyczny. Artykuł pokazuje różne odcienie przedsięwzięcia heraldycznego na przykładzie projektów herbów dla Radzynia i Międzyrzeca.
