This article presents one of the most important Polish books in the diary format originated in the 19th century – Przechadzki po mieście (City Walks) authored by Marceli Motty, a well-known indefatigable eulogist of the nineteenth century Poznań, within the context of the image of the city and its inhabitants presented in the work. In his memoirs, the author aims at primarily investigating individual people’s lives, while the city of Poznań, its streets and squares, simply provides a background and a framework for successive “walks” in the adopted narration. The extraordinary virtues of the book, such as the fluency and richness of the language, sense of humour, narrative clearly energized by powerful anecdotal message, as well as an enormous amount of information on Poznań and its inhabitants (i.e. members of all of the nationalities present in the city), including primarily representatives of the local landed gentry, intelligentsia, and bourgeois class, make this work an outstanding source of its own kind of the venerated author’s personal record of events and impressions. This is a book to be savoured slowly for its richness and depth, rediscovered again and again with each rereading of the book, while its contents have been extensively and continuously explored by historians, city tour guides and all those interested in the history of the capital of Greater Poland in the nineteenth century.

The aim of the article is to present journalist genre called the feuilleton, developing since the Enlightenment period, as a precious source of knowledge which is useful in historical research and in cultural tourism for both cultural tourism organizers and tourists themselves. The subject was described with the use of excellent 19th century series of feuilletons by Marceli Motty called the “Letters of Wojtuś from Zawady”, which are a treasury of information about Poznań and its inhabitants in the 19th century. Marceli Motty draws the picture of the Greater Poland’s capital in the 1860s. Rich language and unusual timeliness of the feuilleton makes them an interesting completion of the guiding commentary meant for inquisitive cultural tourists who are not satisfied only with general or guiding publications. The “Letters of Wojtuś from Zawady”, as well as feuilletons of other authors from that period, can enrich Poznań’s biographical, literary, museum, urban, educational offer, as they constitute an excellent material for designing new tourist-cultural routes around the city of Poznań. The routes can consider a widely-understood cultural theme (visual arts, literature, theater, music), biographical-literary (outstanding citizens of Greater Poland as well as famous culture creators), socio-traditional (everyday lives of the city inhabitants in the period of annexation, fashion, bon ton, language uniqueness, the activity of societies and organizations, education), etc.

The aim of the article is to reflect upon the issue of biographical tourism, its meaning and development prospects in the context of cultural tourism. It is an attempt to answer the following questions: is biographical tourism currently in bloom or in retreat?, and what could boost its development in the future? Biographical tourism is the consequence of the perennial interest in the life and work of outstanding individuals. It grew on the ground of the long-lasting biographical tradition. Its educational meaning in the society is priceless. An increasing number of offers connected with this form of tourism is visible in large tourist centers. Biographies of literary authors, biographical museums (especially the literary ones) as well as biographical trails enjoy the permanent attention especially among lower and higher education students. They participate more and more actively in the process of creating the biographical tourism (by setting routes, gathering materials about outstanding individuals from their regions, etc.). The knowledge gathered along biographical routes is an attractive way of personally getting to know the places connected with famous characters, and it complements the history of culture and literature syllabi at schools and universities. Biographical tourism has a chance to develop further provided it constantly makes its offer more attractive and comprehensive, adjusts it to the needs of modern tourists and creates wide publicity of the biographical routes.

Tourism to industrial and technical facilities blossoms also in Poland. In case of Greater Poland it is not the leading trend as the region does not possess top rank facilities, such as the Wieliczka Salt Mine. However, the region has a different trump that distinguishes it from others – a comparatively large group of well-preserved historical windmills. These unique constructions deserve to be taken care of by restoration specialists and to be saved from oblivion by exposing and popularizing the route built along them. The intensive efforts in this matter should be based on the activity of the Greater Poland Windmill Association and should draw tourists’ attention to Greater Poland (Wielkopolska Region) as a region formerly called “the land of windmills”.

The aim of the article is to show the cultural heritage of the Łowicz culture whose main advantage is its characteristic and recognizable folklore. It is a specific Polish cultural showpiece. Despite its attractiveness, the region and its folklore are not fully used in tourism, and the lack of a wide social awareness of the region’s folk culture is noticeable. There are a lot of places in that region which should be modernized, promoted and their authentic cultural face should be displayed. The article comprehensively presents the elements of Łowicz folklore and museum institutions which exhibit them, the existing forms of promotion and popularization, as well as the proposals of how to increase the tourist attractiveness of the region. Finally, the authors present the results of a survey verifying the level of knowledge of the cultural potential and folklore in the discussed region among tourists visiting Łowicz and among its inhabitants.

Poznań preserved rich and interesting legacy of Gothic art and architecture. To a large extent, this legacy has become a part of the Royal-Imperial Route, though it seems to disappear among other historical-artistic themes. The aim of the article is to present Poznań Gothic heritage and to suggest a theme route focusing on this particular style. This route can become an independent tourist product promoting the city not only in the country but it also could, if it were included into the already existing European Route of Brick Gothic, expand the circle of foreign tourists interested in the issue. In Greater Poland (Wielkopolska Region) Gothic architecture, unlike the Romanesque one, still does not have a separate real or virtual route. Even though Gothic architecture of Greater Poland does not match the impressive Gothic architecture of western Europe, its regional specificity and uniqueness, and at the same time artistic links with other regions of Poland through the activity of building workshops from Silesia, Pomerania and Lesser Poland, create connections with the regions’ architecture, so it fully deserves a wide recognition and exposure for the need of domestic and inbound cultural tourism.
