The article is an attempt to identify lexical categories which determined the original style of Michał Witkowski’s writing to a greatest extent. The analysis of the writer’s language has concentrated on the examination of a style-creative function of collocations and poetic devices. The impact on the shape of artistic idiolect of the Lubiewo’s author has been particularly noticed in metaphors, comparisons, associations and neologisms. Types of phraseological innovations have been discussed. What is more, an attention has been paid to the role of such measures in animation of artistic expression. The metaphors have been identified as devices serving a vivid presentation of thoughts and feelings. Elaborated and extraordinary comparisons, which surprise by a choice of the elements being compared, have been described as examples of Witkowski’s linguistic imagination. The style-creative function of associations has been noticed inthe author’s exploitation of remote connotations between lexemes to create totally unpredictable association chains. The neologisms play this function by introducing new forms and meanings to the test, which have been presented on representative examples. The final conclusion of the above reasoning regards a skilful and innovative use of a language in the work on developing the original style of writing.
