Parental empathy as a correlate of individual differences in empathic concern amongst childrenMany researchers suggest that empathy is influenced by social experiences of a child. It is claimed that the general tendency to empathize is related to environmental factors – family in the first place. Moreover, psychological studies show that empathy is related to the social adjustment of children.Based on these findings the author implemented the research project designed to analyze the link between parents’ empathy and empathic concern displayed by their children (aged 4–9). Additionally, gender differences in empathy were explored amongst children and adults. The study was also aimed at verifying relations between empathy of kindergarten/elementary school children and their behavioral style in a peer group. Results indicate that empathy of mothers parallels their children’s, especially daughters’, tendency to express empathic concern. Mothers scored higher than fathers on two subscales of the Empathy Sensitivity Scale. Girls and boys were seen as similarly empathetic by their teachers. In line with research hypotheses, it was found that children’s empathy is related to the perception of their behaviors. More empathetic children were viewed as cooperative, less aggressive or as maintaining better relation with their teacher.

Over the past few years we have observed an increasing number of theories concerning empathy and its positive influence on our everyday life. This article deals with the issue of empathy in the working environment. In a survey of studies the author attempts to prove that this dispositional trait is required in various professions at different ranks of an organizational hierarchy. Possible negative consequences of empathizing are considered as well. The author concludes that empathy, once neglected, nowadays is highly valued by psychology of organization and management.

Empathy and psychopathy seem to be two distant extremes, which only differ, with nothing similar. Therefore, the question that seems to be surprising is whether such a theoretical perspective is justified. Empathy exerts significant influence on social relationships and is associated with moral development, whereas psychopathy seems to be an opposite phenomenon, as it is associated with the lack of deep interpersonal bonds and the violation of legal norms. As studies from various disciplines and scientific areas indicate, such concepts as behavioral effectiveness, morality or altruism might help explain the complex nature of the interrelationship between psychopathy and empathy. The authors tried to explore and describe the complexity of the two presented concepts in the light of the conducted research, and the resulting theoretical and empirical implications.

Temperamental traits and empathy are both associated with emotional regulation; they thus shape both the quality of an individual’s life and the functioning of his or her social relationships. However, the mediating effects of emotional empathy in the relationship between temperamental characteristics and relationship satisfaction have not been closely analyzed and therefore require further study. This study examined the effects of temperamental arousability – global negative arousability and its components (fear, sadness, discomfort, frustration) – on emotional empathy and, consequently, on relationship satisfaction. One hundred and fifty young adults (104 women, 46 men) aged 20 to 35 participated in the study. The participants had been in romantic relationships for at least six months. The study used a sociodemographic survey and a set of questionnaires which included the Adult Temperament Questionnaire – Short Form, the Empathic Sensitiveness Scale and the RELAT Questionnaire. The results showed that empathic concern fully mediated the relationship between global negative arousability and relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, the effects of fear and sadness on relationship satisfaction were fully mediated by empathic concern and personal distress. Additionally, personal distress fully mediated the relationship between discomfort and relationship satisfaction. Neither empathic concern nor personal distress were mediators in the relationship between frustration and relationship satisfaction. It can therefore be concluded that although partners who exhibit higher global negative arousability report lower relationship satisfaction, they might become more satisfied when being more compassionate and caring towards others.

The present study investigated the degree to which empathy, locus of control, and self-efficacy were related to two types of organizational citizenship behaviours (OCB): those directed toward other individuals (OCB-I) and those directed toward the organization (OCB-O). Data were collected from a sample of 313 employees representing various professions. Two types of OCB were measured by means of the experimental versions of the scale developed on the basis of qualitative data. The Polish version of the questionnaires measuring empathy in work, locus of control and self-efficacy were also used. Results of regression analysis indicated that only empathy in work and self-efficacy were good predictors of OCB. Neither general locus of control nor locus of control in work were good predictors of any kind of OCB. The correlation analysis performed separately for different occupational groups revealed significant differences. In general, the controlled personality variables were better predictors of OCB-I (R2 = 32%) than OCB-O (R2 = 22%). Empathy in work turned out to be the strongest OCB predictor. Significant differences between different occupational groups suggest that the idea of conducting studies on homogeneous professional groups is worth considering.

We examined the influence of identity fusion and status of evaluator on willingness to fight for one’s group after group-descriptive or not group-descriptive feedback. The valence of evaluative information was varied as well: feedback either support negative group-stereotype (negative but descriptive condition) or contradict negative group-stereotype (positive but not descriptive condition). In two studies (N=208 & N=119) we partially replicated previous findings on self-verification. Individuals fused with one’s group were more prone than non fused to fight for group members after receiving, challenging, not group-describing feedback, but only when evaluator’s status was high. When the evaluator’ status was low, fused participants (vs. non fused) engaged in self-enhancement strategies: that is they endorse radical behavior after negative, even if group-describing, feedback. We discuss the importance of identity fusion and evaluator’s status for determining when self-enhancement and self-verification will and will not be evoke.

In the psychological literature there are theories of mother-infant bonding defined as a process that begins in prenatal life. The authors explored the perceived family cohesion amongst people who has just become parents from the perspective of bonding theories. The studies were conducted during 2-3 days after the childbirth. Mothers (the first and the second study) and fathers (the second study) described the current perceived structure of their family system (the position of a newborn child, parents, others in the family), Associations between the perceived family cohesion and personality traits of participants, as well as factors connected with childbirth were examined. The research project was comprised of two studies. Fifty two women took part in the first study, and a group of young parents participated in the second study (29 women and 25 men, including 24 pairs), All women were hospitalized at the Neonatal Clinic – Department of Gynecology and Obsterics at the Medical University of Gdansk, and were 2/3 days after giving birth to a child. Results of the research indicate that mother-infant bonding is a process associated with creating the stability of a family system. Factors that facilitate this process include orientation towards others among mothers, and differentation of self of fathers, as well as their participation in childbirth.
