A range of various sources is used in geographical settlement studies, amongst which the most common are cartographic resources. In the case of a historical approach to geographical studies, however, archival written sources that provide much more information on the topic are equally important. The aim of the present study was to employ historical extracartograhic resources to recreate the structure of urban space in the chosen period of time and to show its variability. The study was conducted in the old town district, as it represents the oldest part of Mysłowice town. An additional aim of the study was to evaluate the utility of archival written and iconographic sources in the analysis of urban space transformations. The starting point of any study based on historical sources is the ability to correctly read (decode) the content of the used sources, thereby understanding the information contained in them. A number of both linguistic and terminological difficulties can be found when conducting such a study. Research has shown that this type of media for historical information (written and iconographic sources) is burdened with significant interpretation errors and require authenticity verification. Historical source materials, however, have a number of advantages – they allow the researcher to recreate the functional space of the town, even in detail. What is more, iconographic materials are easily readable and allow the researcher to recreate the physiognomy of urban space. Written sources, in turn, provide valuable direct information on business entities and the space of the town. Working with historical sources is based on systematic verification of their reliability, complementing their contents or learning how to interpret them correctly. The researcher is thus required to learn, among others, the terminology of a specific period of time, new typefaces and languages, or how to decipher abbreviations and separate fact from fiction.

The aim of the study was to analyse the transformation of spatial structures of towns in North-Eastern Poland, characterized by different origins and happening due to the construction of railway line. The region in question was in the past subject to different settlement processes taking place against the background of historical events such as, among others, the conquest of land by the Teutonic Knights and the political partition of Poland (the border between Prussia and Russia), thereby forming diverse urban systems, later influenced by the railway, which modified their spatial structures, as well as changed their existing importance in the region. As a result of aforementioned changes different forms of urban layouts were formed - line layouts within the historic towns and more complicated layouts within the new railway settlements. The entire analytical procedure was based mainly on archival cartographic materials and divided into three parts: conditions of settlements development, analyze the evolution of its spatial layouts and the typology of researched urban layouts. The chronological summary of the parts allowed for the comparison of the spatial structure of a given town and for its interpretation. In addition, field research necessary for the interpretation of the contemporary structures of chosen towns was carried out. The final result was a synthesis of research in the form of a typology of links between the original structure and the railway station, distinguishing between the different forms of settlements.

Celem badań była ocena jakości zagospodarowania przestrzennego dzielnicy staromiejskiej w Mysłowicach z zastosowaniem audytu miejskiego. Stanowi on procedurę z modułami niezależnego zbierania i przetwarzania danych celem sporządzania programów rewitalizacji oraz jej monitorowana ex post. Badany obszar posiada historyczny układ urbanistyczno-architektoniczny, a współcześnie cechuje się recesją ekonomiczną i postępującą degradacją tkanki miejskiej. Do określenia skali degradacji urbanistyczno-funkcjonalnej posłużono się formularzem zawierającym badane cechy i jednostki przestrzenne wraz z przyznanymi im odpowiednimi wagami punktowymi (0–3). Audytu dokonano wzdłuż wszystkich ulic i placów dzielnicy staromiejskiej z efektem finalnym w postaci mapy. Badania wskazują, iż najlepiej utrzymane jest centrum administracyjno-usługowe dzielnicy, z kolei najwyższy stopień degradacji cechuje jej obrzeża północno-zachodnie i południowe. Uzyskane wyniki zostały ponadto potwierdzone w aktualizacji Miejskiego Programu Rewitalizacji dla miasta Mysłowice.

The aim of the study is evaluation of the spatial organization quality of the Old Town district in Mysłowice town, with using of the urban audit. This is a procedure with independent modules for data collection and processing for the revitalization programs preparation and for revitalization monitoring ex post also. Selected study area has a historical urban and architectural pattern and contemporary it characterized by the economic recession and progressive degradation of the urban tissue. To determine the scale of urban and functional degradation was used the form with researched features and spatial units with its point rates (from 0 to 3). The urban audit was made within all of the Old Town’s streets and squares and the final results was presented on map. The studies show that the district of administration and service center is the best maintained, and the highest degree of degradation is noted in north-west and south peripheries. Obtained results were also confirmed in an update of the Municipal Revitalization Program for the Mysłowice town

The author’s aim was to present the spatial structure transformations within one of the old part of the Mysłowice city – Nowe Miasto (New Town). The genesis of this area dates back to 19th century, when its functional and spatial development connected with boundary functions and railway transport (an important international railway hub since 1847) was observed. Fundamental source concerning the morphologic state of Nowe Miasto are archival and contemporary town plans, showing different evolution stages of study area. Research procedure was based on chronological comparison of these cartographic materials, according to M.R.G. Conzen’s method. The next step of research included interpretation, verification and comparative analysis of the plans through their overlapping. The final result is visualization of spatial structure dynamics within the study area over the 1859–2013 period. Three phases of the spatial and functional development of Nowe Miasto urban space were identified: initial (second half of 19th cent.), culminate (early 20th cent.) and spatial regression (the are of 21th cent.).

The article addresses the question of the emergence of urban centres with a gateway function in the area of contemporary Poland. The work concentrates on three urban centres – Mysłowice, Szczakowa and Granica (Maczki) – which gateway function was conditioned by the existence of railway border crossings in the past that provided services for international transport. The interpretation of settlements and their transformations followed the town plan analysis includes method of Conzen. The article indicates spatial consequences of this kind of function which influenced a significant part of the urban area in the indicated towns. The study highlights the dynamics of spatial changes contemporarily conditioned by the loss of the former gateway function and a fact that role of the border has been marginalized. From the other point of view the decreasing role of the political borders which have become in Europe in most cases barely a symbolic meaning. In the presented case studies the key aspect determining the marginalization of their role in the rail transport system and also their urban development was the change of the political borders and their negative consequences (demolition post-rail areas, formation of functionally derelict areas or depopulation). Former glory and role of these three towns are the still existing railway stations. Fortunately, presented railway stations – their potential and heritage give new possibilities for ideas of functional changes and future development.
