The article is based on statements for press made by scientists-politicians, i.e. holders of scientific titles of doctor, associate professor and professor who served as MPs or senators in 1998-2004. The analysis shows that when scientists-politicians speak about subjects concerning current politics, they use persuasive argumentation (which is an opposition of scientific argumentation). Recognition of this fact is the point of departure for considerations on the abandonment of scientific ethos (consisting of self-reflection, scepticism, precision etc.). The author attempts to show that the main reasons lie in the differences between scientific and political activities and in the necessity to use common sense knowledge in the face of complexity as a feature of the political domain.

In particular, its effects in publications and organizational conditions fostering scientifi c effectiveness. This effectiveness is chiefly rooted in the creative process and its basic features such as sustainability and susceptibility to external determinants which traits are a subject of psychology of creativity and psychology of organization. Both domains are hence a framework for presented considerations, though offered paper is far from completeness, rather aiming at pointing a direction for future reflection.

The authors present the aim, tool, course and results of the research on occupational stress level among the academic staff from the University of Zielona Gora. The results of general stress level and intensification of particular stressors will be presented in a wider context: general consideration on occupational stress (called also job stress), i.e. causes, symptoms and effects; reflections on the specificity of scientific work from the perspective of psychological concepts of stress; review of research (relatively rare) on the stressors of scientific work; the attempt to define university as a work place. At the end the authors will present the conclusions concerning individual and institutional effects of occupational stress among academic staff.
