Walter Benjamin’s philosophical dialogue with Kant’s “Critique of the Power of Judgment” (1790) finds a remarkable formulation in the “Critical Foreword” to the “Origin of German Tragic Drama” (1928), where the concept of aesthetic reflective judgment acquires the auto-reflexive form of the “esoteric essay”. The essay is “esoteric“ insofar as it produces and fictionalizes within its particular coordinating structure representations of the conditions of possibility of thought. This philosophical-literary task also marks the distance of a Kantian interpretation of the “Foreword” from a Hegelian one.

Walter Benjamins philosophischer Dialog mit Kants „Kritik der Urteilskraft“ (1790) findet eine bemerkenswerte Ausprägung in der „Erkenntniskritischen Vorrede“ seines „Ursprungs des deutschen Trauerspiels“ (1928), wo das Konzept der ästhetischen Urteilskraft sein schreibpraktisches Pendant in der autoreflexiven Form des „esoterischen Essays“ besitzt. „Esoterisch“ ist dieser, insofern er in seiner besonderen Koordinationsstruktur Darstellungen der Möglichkeitsbedingungen des Denkens hervorbringt und fiktionalisiert. Diese philosophisch-literarische Aufgabe des Essays spricht für eine kantische statt eine hegelsche Lektüre der „Vorrede“.
