In a short biography of Tadeusz Brzeski (1884–1958), the author presents the professor’s education and academic work up to 1939, and then his fate during the war. Brzeski’s experience of emigration includes exile to Kazakhstan and arrival in London, where he established and became involved in the activities of various organisations. e author also presents sources and studies on the academic’s legacy, and then summarises the entire article.

This paper presents the Study Centre for Polish History and Culture in Chicago as a planned Polski Uniwersytet na Obczyźnie (PUNO, Polish University Abroad in London) branch, and problems related to setting it up in 1978–1979. The first part presents the originator of the Chicago Study Centre, Professor Michał Bida, and the formal and organizational di¢culties in setting up a new institution. The second part outlines the process of the formation of the organization. e third part describes the issues and misunderstandings between people involved in running the institution and the legal problems related to it, including ones which aected its functioning. The fourth section describes the conflict of the Study Centre administrator with its director, and outlines the consequences. The fifth part describes the crisis within the Chicago organization itself and the collapse of the idea of its formal recognition as a PUNO branch in the USA.
