The paper gives an explanation of some ontological and epistemological commitments of a cognitive research program dealing with the social representations, which has been coined by Dan Sperber, namely of the epidemiology of representations. Social representations are described as causal chains linking together mental representations and public productions. The importance of the psychological aspects and external, historical aspects is stressed as necessary in explaining social phenomena. The paper reviews critically Durkheim's concept of social phenomena and an epistemologically more plausible alternative is offered.

The paper deals with the research effectivity of Slovak public universities during ten years period (2008 – 2017). Through non-parametric analysis of trends and mixed-effects model with multivariate t-distribution, trends and differences are analysed in detail. The analytical calculations are focused on properly identifying both monotonic trends and change points in the research effectivity. Differences in research effectivity are identified and discussed. The analysis shows that only eight out of 20 Slovak public universities display long-term research effectivity, and 12 out of 20 are ineffective in research in the long run, including 5 with extremely low and/or worsening research effectivity. Conversely, some universities display positive long-term trend. In conclusion, the paper also points out the difficulty of long-term achieving ongoing research effectivity due to the non-systematic and abrupt changes of funding principles from Slovak government.

In this article, author tries to show that to explain ethnic identities, we need to evoke both anthropological and psychological explorations. The recent research results in cognitive psychology are provided, namely, the psychological evidence concerning the essentialist reasoning about social groups in everyday thought. Some empirical data from the field-work in Western Ukraine (Transcarpathia) are presented and discussed.

Our goal was to investigate the efficacy of a Mindfulness-Based Intervention (MBI) in the form of a short-term, online intervention using exercises from Mindfulness-Based Stress-Reduction program on self-compassion, self-reassurance and self-criticism in a non-clinical population. We conducted pre-, post- and two-month follow-up measures of self-compassion, self-reassurance and self-criticism. A total of 146 participants, recruited through convenience sampling, were randomly allocated to the intervention with daily exercises for consecutive 15 days and to a control condition with no treatment. The intervention group reported a significant reduction in self-criticism and self-uncompassionate responding with effects present at two-month follow-up. There was a short-term effect of the training on self-compassion with no effect present at the two-month follow-up and no significant effect on self-reassurance. A limitation of the study is that participants’ previous experience with meditation was not assessed, and thus the findings may be a result of previous meditation practice and not the intervention itself. Despite this limitation, the findings show that an online short-term MBI may be helpful in reducing self-criticism in general population, but a larger study taking into account the limitations needs to be conducted to replicate this effect before recommendations for clinical practice can be made.
