Cognitive distortions and recidivism in sexual offenders against children

Aim. The purpose of the study was to examine if cognitive distortions of various content presented by sexual offenders against children are related with sexual recidivism risk and actual recidivism. To extend the reliability of the interpretation of its results, differences in the number of cognitive distortions exhibited by sexual offenders against children and controls and relation between cognitive distortions measured explicitly and implicitly are also examined. Method. 64 sexual offenders against children, 46 sexual offenders against adults, 74 nonsexual violent offenders, and 68 non-offending males participated in the study. Explicit and implicit cognitive distortions were measured by two newly created instruments. Sexual recidivism risk were assessed using Static-99. Data on conviction and actual recidivism were drawn from penitentiary files. Results. Implicit and explicit cognitive distortions were mostly unrelated. Offenders showed more cognitive distortions than non-offending males. Cognitive distortions were not associated with static sexual recidivism risk. In explicit measurement sexual recidivists showed more cognitive distortions of all types with sexual content than non-recidivists. Conclusion. Results of the study suggests that cognitive distortions with sexual content are criminogenic need. Thus, tackling them in treatment shall be contemplated.

Building a coherent system for preventing crimes against sexual freedom and morality requires examining human resources of specialists working with the perpetrators of such offences, especially sexual health specialists. The purpose of this research was to describe said resources. One hundred and forty-two specialists have completed an online survey concerning their competences, the nature of work with perpetrators, the specialists’ experience of such work, and factors which may convince those not working with perpetrators to undertake such work. Specialists working with perpetrators have high but non-specific competences. Difficulties in work arise from the traits of the perpetrators, the specialists’ deficit in specific competences, and the functioning of the criminal justice system in the micro- and macroscale. In the short term, action to sustain the motivation of people already working with the perpetrators must be taken, so they do not quit that job. In the long term, one would have to reorganise the system of impact exerted on the perpetrators, so as to make it more coherent, rational and effective.

Konstrukcja spójnego systemu przeciwdziałania przestępstwom przeciwko wolności seksualnej i obyczajności wymaga zbadania zasobów kadrowych specjalistów pracujących ze sprawcami tych czynów, w szczególności specjalistów ds. zdrowia seksualnego. Celem niniejszego badania był opis tych zasobów. Ankietę online badającą kompetencje specjalistów, charakterystykę pracy podejmowanej ze sprawcami, sposób doświadczania tej pracy i charakterystykę czynników mogących skłonić specjalistów niepracujących ze sprawcami do podjęcia tej pracy wypełniło 142 specjalistów. Kompetencje specjalistów pracujących ze sprawcami są wysokie, ale niespecyficzne. Trudności w pracy wynikają z cech sprawców, deficytu specyficznych kompetencji specjalistów oraz funkcjonowania systemu sprawiedliwości karnej na poziomie mikro i makro. W perspektywie krótkoterminowej konieczne jest podjęcie działań zmierzających do podtrzymania motywacji osób już pracujących ze sprawcami, by zapobiec ich rezygnacji z tej pracy. W perspektywie długoterminowej konieczna jest reorganizacja systemu oddziaływań wobec sprawców, w celu zwiększenia jego spójności, racjonalności i skuteczności.
