The author counters the thesis of Marcin Król from the article The Crisis of European Thought. Hrycak argues that Europe is still important, but in a different way than it used to be. He provides the example of Ukraine, stressing the role Europe played in the process of the emergence of Ukrainian identity and examining the issue of how Europe is perceived in present day Ukraine. The article also touches upon the problem of the identity of Eastern Europe and offers some solutions as how to make Eastern Europe less “eastern.”
