The ethnography of the working class represented one of the most remarkable research directions of contemporary ethnography and folkloristics undertaken by the Academy of Sciences and the institutions of higher learning in the second half of the 20th century. Undoubtedly, despite partial ideological manipulations, the ethnographic study of factory workers and miners, in particular, achieved a number of remarkable results, which stand the test of international comparison. Some research projects focused on the themes and also methods previously neglected by historians (every day life of the working class, the material culture of daily living, folklore, etc.). A whole range of research projects - including comprehensive works and those by teams of authors - remained totally unpublished or have until now remained “hidden” in practically inaccessible internal collections of works and monographs. After 1989 Czech ethnographers (ethnologists, socio-cultural anthropologists) have completely shifted away from the study of the working class, which is a situation which does not correspond with the topical interests of these disciplines, for example in Western Europe. This study defines the fundamental thematical and methodological trajectories of the ethnographic study of the working class and miners in terms of the development of the ethnographic discipline’s discourse. It also broadly outlines less well known or unpublished results, which could provide efficient starting points even for current research. At the same time, the author gives thought to current possibilities (non-existent, in fact) of the ethnography of the working class in the Czech Republic and the possibilities of cooperation between ethnographic institutions which have at their disposal very extensive and often unprocessed collections on these issues, and the historian community.

Historical study of nature, environment and relationship between man and forested environment, both on the level of the variety of practical experiences, economic, social and cultural uses and values of the natural world; and on the level of the strong symbolic, linguistic and metaphoric bond between man and nature has a long tradition and moreover has become one of the most influential historical discipline during last decades. However, in the Czech Republic forest history (despite its fruitful older legacy) is totally undeveloped and since 1960’s almost no important work has been written. Because of extreme complexity of environment-oriented historical approaches only one of them – forest history is described and analysed in the article including its methods and theories. The still increasing number of scholars and disciplines involved worldwide in forest history represents variety of methodological approaches and produces many of remarkable works. It is possible to recognize five mainstream orientations among them, which are depicted in the study. These are: (1) Traditionally oriented forest and forestry history focused on forest management, study of legal systems tied to forests and history of hunting. (2) Research on economic and social history of forests and woodlands and study of subsistence activities and industrial branches (e.g. glass-making and metallurgy) connected with forests. (3) Historical-anthropological research on forests and trees in the human mentalities and connected research of so-called cultural values of forest ecosystems. (4) Complex archaeological and ethnological research of material culture connected with forests and its inhabitants. (5) Study of ecological and environmental aspects of relationship between humans and forests.

The article is a case study of a former military intelligence tower Havran located in Western Bohemia borderland in former Iron Curtain buffer zone. It is focused especially on process of shifting from a military installation, through a ruin, towards a lookout tower and an Iron Curtain memorial. The study is focused on changes of physical structures of the tower and content of the exhibition. The goals are to present an analysis of forming of special type of heritage, to review and discuss processes of the negotiating of the meaning of the landscape, demonstrated on the site with a tower. As methods we used historical archive research, review of internet fora and media articles as a specific data source for the change of the tower, for the exhibition currently located at the lookout tower we did basic qualitative content analysis.
