The article concerns the influence of Stanisław Wyspiański’s art on the stained-glass design projects of Fryderyk Romańczyk which the latter executed for the churches of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin. In the 30s and 40s of the previous century, Romańczyk ran a well-prospering stained-glass studio whereas his art work was characterized by a good technique and clear inspiration with the art work of the Art Nouveau period in its native Young Poland variety, in which an important role was played by motifs inspired by the local Polish flora. At the beginning of the article, the authoress also discusses the only example of a stained-glass window designed by Stanisław Wyspiański, an exceptional visionary in Polish art and theatre, to be found on the territory of the present-day province of Silesia. The above stained-glass window which is to be found in the chapel of the Metropolitan Curia in Katowice and which presents Crucified Christ borne on the wings of a Seraph, was realized by the Cracow Stained Glass Studio S. G. Żeleński (Romańczyk participated in the work), thirty years after the creation of the design project; the above stained-glass work is an outstanding example of the Polish Art Nouveau style.

Kościoły drewniane występujące na obszarze województwa śląskiego przynależą do różnych ośrodków kulturowych. Zasadniczo podlegają dwóm typom budownictwa drewnianego – małopolskiemu (pn. i pd.-wsch. część województwa) i śląskiemu (pozostałe tereny). Zróżnicowane są ich wyposażenie i wystrój, zazwyczaj podlegające trendom i modom stylistycznym panującym w danym okresie oraz uwarunkowaniom historycznym. Artykuł jest próbą przedstawienia w skrótowej formie zachowanych, jak również odkrytych ostatnio dekoracji malarskich znajdujących się w drewnianych świątyniach województwa śląskiego. Jako przyczynek do dalszych, pogłębionych badań ma on charakter szkicu. Autorka podejmuje próbę uwzględnienia wszystkich malowideł o charakterze artystycznym na omawianym terenie. Przedstawiono zespoły malarskie znajdujące się w 35 świątyniach. W części z kościołów występują malowidła z różnych epok historycznych, jak na przykład w Starej Wsi i w Ćwiklicach, gdzie odnaleźć można cztery i pięć warstw historycznych malowideł. Spośród omawianych polichromii należy wyróżnić te dotychczas nieznane, odsłonięte w ostatnich kilkunastu latach, a znajdujące się w świątyniach drewnianych w Łaziskach, Żernicy, Sierakowicach oraz w Starej Wsi.

Wooden churches, that are present in the Province of Silesia, belong to different cultural centers. Basically, they were erected in accordance to two types of wooden construction: one typical for Lesser Poland (north and south-eastern part of the province) and one typical for Upper Silesia (the remaining areas). Diverse in terms of their fittings and decor, they were usually influenced by trends and styles of a specific period, as well as historical conditions. The following article attempts to deliver a brief presentation of the preserved as well as recently discovered paintings in wooden churches of the Province of Silesia. As a contribution to further in-depth researches, the article is a sketch, attempting to include all the paintings of artistic character found in the discussed region. Described painting collections are located in 35 temples. In several studied churches, such as those from Stara Wieś and Ćwiklice, there are paintings from various historical periods. One can find there four or five layers of historical paintings. Among the discussed polychromies we should draw special attention to those which, so far unknown, have been revealed in the last several years, including paintings located in wooden churches in Łaziska, Żernica, Sierakowice and Stara Wieś.
