Determinants of Liquidity Risk in the Countries of the European Economic Area

The paper documents cross-country variation in the relationship between the deposit insurance scheme and liquidity risk in banks and explores the banking sector specific and macroeconomic determinants that can explain the variation. There is a lack of articles exploring the phenomenon in Europe, authors studying the issue focus on the United States and other parts of the world, so it is difficult to apply their results to Europe. The results of their research are also ambiguous. Using data from 28 countries of the European Economic Area by means of panel regression calculated with the use of GLS estimator with random effects, I established that an increase in deposit insurance coverage reduces the risk of liquidity. The study provides new information to help evaluate deposit insurance schemes across EEA countries.

The collection of the Bydgoszcz City Library has, since 1907, included books from the Bernardine Monastery. In the 1930s, the director Witold Bełza decided to create a room inside the library reminiscent of a medieval scriptorium, where priceless works were supposed to be stored. The project involved: Jerzy Rupniewski, a painter, Wiktor Zabielski, an architect, Edward Kwiatkowski, a stained glass artist, Anastazy Czarnecki, a carpenter, as well as local craft guilds and private funders. The work lasted from 1934 to 1936. At the same time, lawyer and collector Kazimierz Kierski donated a collection of documents and manuscripts to the resources of the Bydgoszcz City Library. With these in mind, the so-called ‘Royal Hall’ was created adjacent to the Bernardine Library, with the same team of designers working on its decoration. It was opened to readers and visitors in 1937. The two interiors, which fortunately survived World War II, remain original reminders of a time when the city sought its pre-partition history, inscribing its own identity in the history of the Second Republic.

W zbiorach Biblioteki Miejskiej w Bydgoszczy znajduje się od 1907 roku księgozbiór pochodzący z klasztoru Bernardynów. W latach 30. XX wieku dyrektor Witold Bełza postanowił stworzyć we wnętrzach książnicy pomieszczenie przypominające średniowieczne skryptorium, w którym bezcenne dzieła miały być przechowywane. W realizację projektu zaangażowani byli: Jerzy Rupniewski, malarz, Wiktor Zabielski, architekt, Edward Kwiatkowski, witrażysta, Anastazy Czarnecki, stolarz oraz miejscowe cechy rzemieślnicze i prywatni fundatorzy. Prace trwały od 1934 do 1936 roku. W tym samym czasie prawnik i kolekcjoner Kazimierz Kierski przekazał do zbiorów Biblioteki Miejskiej w Bydgoszczy kolekcję dokumentów i rękopisów. Dla nich w sąsiedztwie Biblioteki Bernardynów powstała tzw. Sala Królewska, nad wystrojem której pracował ten sam zespół projektantów. Została ona otwarta dla czytelników i zwiedzających w 1937 roku. Oba wnętrza, które szczęśliwie przetrwały II wojnę światową, pozostają oryginalną pamiątką po czasach, kiedy miasto szukało swojej przedrozbiorowej historii, wpisując własną tożsamość w dzieje II Rzeczypospolitej.

Artykuł przedstawia życie i dorobek naukowy zapomnianego polskiego psychiatry, Józefa Apolinarego Rolle (1830-1894). Był on jednym z pierwszych polskich lekarzy, którzy specjalizowali się w psychiatrii w Niemczech i we Francji. Przez większość życia kierował zakładem dla chorych umysłowo w Kamieńcu Podolskim. Zmodernizował opiekę nad chorymi, m.in. wprowadzając terapię zajęciową. Poza pracami naukowymi z zakresu psychiatrii Rolle publikował artykuły historyczne oparte na dokumentach pochodzących z archiwów domowych i kolekcji rodzinnych. Jego prace historyczne cieszyły się popularnością i zainspirowały Henryka Sienkiewicza do napisania „Trylogii”. Materiałem do niniejszego studium były artykuły Józefa Rolle i skierowane do niego listy z lat 1868-1896, przechowywane w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej w Krakowie.

The article presents a forgotten Polish psychiatrist Józef Apolinary Rolle (1830-1894), his life and achievements. He was one of the first Polish physicians trained in psychiatry in Germany and France. Almost all life he run the ward for mentally ill patients in the town of Kamieniec Podolski, then in Russian Poland. He modernized therapy of mental disease and introduce occupational therapy. Despite works on psychiatry, he published historical articles based on documents taken from some private archives and family collections, missed at the present time. His historical works were popular and inspired Henryk Sienkiewicz to write “Trilogy”. This study is based on articles by Rolle and the collection of letters sent to him in 1868-1896 and kept in the Jagiellonian Library in Cracow.
