Television news services use many linguistic persuasive and manipulative methods, which is particularly visible when giving account of political events. The author of this paper examines these mechanisms, names them and demonstrates, based on specifi c examples from the collected text corpus, the extent to which media coverage distorts reality and infl uences the public opinion. The author performs a qualitative analysis of six broadcasts of the main news bulletins in two TV stations. This paper is a case study illustrating the tools and methods of manipulating and methods of constructing media contents. For the observations to have a higher degree of generalisation, the text does not indicate the names of the TV stations (the interested readers are referred to the last footnote and index).

An article presents types of roles that Magda Gessler plays while being a host of TV makeover show “Kitchen Nightmares”. There are several types, such as: authority, specialist, tutor, tyrant and many more. The issues are considered in the media studies perspective, as well as in other point of views, such as psychology, education studies and sociology. The analysis in this article is a result of watching five different episodes of the programme during ten seasons of programme release. All of the conclusions were made based on quotes in this several episodes.

Artykuł zawiera analizę zaobserwowanych zachowań i wypowiedzi Magdy Gessler, na której to podstawie została zdefiniowana jej rola w znanym programie „Kuchenne rewolucje”. Występuje tu bardzo zróżnicowany obraz telewizyjnej postaci – jednocześnie autorytetu, eksperta i nauczyciela, a niekiedy tyrana. W artykule opisane zostały role, jakie pełni Magda Gessler w programie. Kwestia jest rozpatrywana z perspektywy medioznawczej, choć poszczególne wątki są też ujmowane w kontekście psychologii, pedagogiki i socjologii. Przeanalizowano szczegółowo pięć odcinków programu „Kuchenne rewolucje”, losowo wybranych z dziesięciu sezonów.
