Philanthropy from individual donors, as an example of prosocial behaviour, has defined and influenced higher education in the USA since the founding of Harvard. American higher education as we know it today would not exist if it were not for voluntary contributions of time, wealth, service, and talents of many individuals as well as collective giving. More recently, as state support declined and endowments fell in the economic downturn, philanthropic support of the university enables it to better meet the challenges facing higher education today. As a result, it is important that universities engage all possible donors in fundraising activities. University advancement offices ponder what motivates alumnito make regular financial contributions to their alma mater, and how to encourage undergraduate students and young alumni to be philanthropic on a long-term basis. It is imperative for alumni office to have and act upon a vision that supports the institutional mission. Thus, it has to offer opportunities for the future donors to learn about and participate in community service, civic engagement, service-learning projects, and student alumni associations. In such a way, university cultivates a generation of engaged alumni dedicated to future service to the university. Involvement of alumni in their alma mater generates interest, and that interest often translates into the giving of time, advocacy, and money. This article presents the analysis of organizational identification features, as a part of social identity theory, and principles of alumni charity support for higher educational institutions in the USA. Sources for higher education funding, issues of philanthropy culture, as well as kinds and peculiarities of alumni development programsare discussed. The author outlines the suggestions for academic curriculum to help promote and develop youth engagement in university life, social, civic, and community building through philanthropy, volunteerism, and fundraising practices for universities. It is out of the question that additional research on philanthropy toward universities among different types of donors is important. Understanding the complexity of motives with which donations are made, implementation of advancement programs with well-thought strategies, bridging theory and practice will enable public universities to survive and carry on academic traditions in the current economic downturn.

The state of fundraising theory and research, legal trends affecting philanthropy and new patterns of educational fundraising development at the global, regional and institutional levels, as well as the comparison of foreign and national teaching experiences for the purpose of mutual enrichment of educational cultures can be considered a distinct subject of comparative education research. Fundraising in higher education is interdisciplinary in its nature, as it is placed within the subject fields of several branches of modern science such as economics, marketing, sociology, psychology, higher education management that assumes a multidimensional approach to its research. The analysis of numerous Ukrainian research papers shows that a holistic study, ascertaining the theoretical, contextual, and organizational principles of fundraising practices in public U.S. universities and examining issues of extramural funding sources in national Ukrainian higher education, has not been carried out. The relevance and significance of such research is endorsed by the provisions of a wide range of normative documents and regulations of Ukraine, especially such as the Concept of humanitarian development of the Ukrainian state until 2020, Decree of the President of Ukraine «On the National Doctrine of Education Development» (2002), Laws of Ukraine «On Priorities of Innovative Practices in Ukraine» (2012), «On Charity and Charitable Organizations» (1997, 2013), «On Higher Education» (2014), etc. State funding poses significant challenges for Ukrainian universities in times of neoliberal ideology of contemporary reformsin national higher education. The purpose of this paper is to provide some recommendations on how to implement the best fundraising practices of public U.S. universities in the area of higher education in Ukraine on the national, regional and institutional levels. The article focuses on the data published in a range of educational science journals to highlight the purposes, features and structure of university financial endowments. All things considered the proposed recommendations can help Ukrainian universities carry on their social mission, funding various activities relating to education, research and innovation. The national interests of Ukraine urgently require it to join the international community and become an integral and influential European state. Higher education institutions of Ukraine should take an active part in the implementation of this task.

The American system of higher education is admired around the world, both for its quality and diversity. Despite criticisms that are sometimes directed toward U.S. universities, they are regarded as models by many institutions elsewhere around the world. Ukraine is undergoing a dramatic transition in its higher education system. Previously reliant entirely on the government, Ukrainian universities now face declining government funding and are being encouraged to develop alternative sources of support. At the same time, strengthening higher education is viewed as a critical national strategy for growth in a global economy based on information technology. In this time of change, many universities are seeking to emulate higher education in the United States, especially with regard to the development of philanthropic support. Ukraine has also got deeply rooted giving traditions, which we find useful to understand in order to determine how or whether to adapt successful national practices, combined with progressive American experience, to our contemporary situation in higher education. Thus, the following paper introduces definitions of the key terms used in the research, and analyses their etymology as well as the way they relate to each other in an integrated whole. The establishment of common definitions is a criterion of science. The fields of institutional advancement and educational fundraising have yet to achieve such commonality, and although the paper does not resolve that problem, it offers some important distinctions. In the paper the author provides an overview of the historical tendencies and models of philanthropic giving in Ukrainian society that shed the light on why people give and on the factors and processes that influenced that behavior. Moreover, the timeline of key philanthropic events in Ukraine that refer to patronage of education and culture, beginning with the Paleolithic age up to the present days, is compiled; and the list of benefactors, set in their social context, in each of the specified periods is presented in the paper. Furthermore, the paper places contemporary educational fundraising in the context of history. It is not only a history of philanthropy, but rather a brief history of organized fundraising in Ukraine. Eventually, the focus is on the actual state of fundraising practices in the national system of higher education. The evolution of the professional field and the prospects for the development of educational fundraising as a tool to diversify sources of extramural support for university, in the context of neoliberal ideology of modern educational reforms, are discussed.
