The article puts forwards the thesis that the language in most of Maria Dabrowska's diaries was a conscious creation on the part of the writer and was not the result of a spontaneous recording of events and the authoress' experiences. It should also be assumed that Dabrowska wrote the diaries with the view that they would later (probably posthumously) be published and that she consciously used that style and linguistic tricks. The diaries include not only the authoress' narrative but also direct and indirect speech, as well as seemingly reported speech. One can only admire Dabrowska's mastery of language, whereby she was able to combine various linguistic and stylistic elements in order to create a cohesive whole in specific entries in the diaries. The article also shows the evolution of the style of Maria Dabrowska's diaries from the relatively unoriginal, youthful style of the diaries of the 1920s to the mature, original style of the diaries of the 1950s and 1960s. It also shows that the authoress - depending on the subject and its importance - used vocabularies for various registers of the Polish language: from academic and officialese, through careful standard Polish (most frequently), to colloquial and even vulgar language. Some attention is paid to the authoress' awareness of language, as well as her general attitude to both the language of her own works as well as to linguists. This article is only a preliminary study - the language of Maria Dabrowska's diaries deserves detailed study.

The paper is devoted to shtetl's space that is analyzed in the sociological framework. Starting from theoretical assumptions of the sociology of space, the author attempts to systematize and to characterize the modes and stages of the production of the space of the Jewish shtetl. The micro-level analysis allows to define the shtetl as a socio-spatial phenomenon. The article is supposed to be a significant contribution in understanding the shtetl's notion and in creating its definition that could transcend the framework of a simple historical or cultural analysis.

Introduction: Whipple’s disease is a chronic systemic infectious disorder with Tropheryma whipplei as an etiologic agent, occurring rarely and affecting numerous organs and systems. The variety of symptoms and a non-typical course make it difficult to establish a proper diagnosis. Purpose: In this study, etiopathogenesis, diagnostics and treatment of Whipple’s disease were presented based on the case report of 60-year-old man diagnosed with Whipple’s disease. Case presentation: Persistent diarrhoea with weight loss, lymphadenopathy in the abdominal cavity and moderate microcytic anemia predominated in the clinical picture. Diagnosis was put based on the clinical picture and macroscopic assessment of the small intestine and the presence of macrophages filled with a PAS-positive substance in the lamina propria. To deepen diagnostics, samples collected were assessed showing macrophages with the damaged mucosa, containing numerous elongated micro-organisms whose ultrastructure corresponded to Tropheryma whipplei. The patient’s clinical conditions improved after antibiotic therapy. Conclusions: It is vital to remember about Whipple’s disease in patients with chronic diseases due to a non-specific clinical picture and difficulties in establishing a proper diagnosis. When the disease is diagnosed unequivocally, proper and effective antibiotic therapy should be instituted immediately.
