The article discusses the phenomenon of the Theatre of the Absurd in Dušan Kovačević's writings. His dramas concerned as written according to the above mentioned trend all date after the 1990s: Urnebesna tragedija (The Burlesque Tragedy, 1991), Lari Tompson – tragedija jedne mladosti (Larry Thompson, the Tragedy of a Youth, 1995), Kontejner sa pet zvezdica (Five-Star Dumpster, 1996), Doktor Ńuster (Doctor Shoemaker, 2001). The plays are analyzed in the context of the whole playwriting of Kovaĉević, and the characteristics of the European Theatre of the Absurd. In these dramas Kovaĉević describes psychological and physiological aspects of the human existence. Though, he is interested in the individual as a social being. Actions of his characters are conditioned by the community. The writer brings forward Polish absurdists like Slawomir Mrozek, who uses drama to expose social mechanisms. I also try to explain what made Kovaĉević abandon comedy and devote himself to the Theatre of the Absurd. The evolution of his writings is also affected by social and political changes in Serbia.
