My contribution analyses and compares the forms and functions of narrative themes of ‘mutation’ in three key tales of Wilhelm Hauff ’s 1827 “Fairy Tale Almanac”, as well as their anthropological, zoological, ethical, and poetological implications, which are characteristic of the threshold between late Romanticism and early Realism: In Nose, The Dwarf, human characters are transformed into animals and ‘dwarfs’ through speech acts of magic, whereas The Ape as Human stages the transformation of an animal character into a human being through training and education. The Abner tale finally presents the (self-)transformation of its protagonist into an improvisatory narrator and functions as a metapoetic commentary on the subversive potential of ‘inappropriate’ narration.

Mein Beitrag vergleicht die Formen und Funktionen von erzählten Prozessen der Verwandlung in drei aufeinanderfolgenden ,Kernerzählungen‘ aus Wilhelm Hauffs „Märchen-Almanach“ von 1827 und ihre anthropologisch-zoologischen, kulturpoetisch-ethischen sowie ästhetisch-poetologischen Implikationen an der Epochenschwelle zwischen Spätromantik und Frührealismus: Im Zwerg Nase-Märchen werden menschliche Figuren durch magische Sprechakte in Tiere und ,Zwerge‘ verwandelt, in Der Affe als Mensch verwandelt sich eine tierische Figur durch ein Erziehungs- und Bildungsprogramm in einen Menschen. Im Abner-Märchen schließlich ,verwandelt‘ sich der Protagonist metaphorisch in einen Erzähler, sodass diese dritte Erzählung wie ein verbindender metapoetischer Kommentar zu den anderen fungiert, indem sie die subversive Kraft improvisatorischen, situationsinadäquaten Erzählens thematisiert.
