Po kongresie berlińskim (1878) Bośnia i Hercegowina znalazła się w austro-węgierskiej strefi e wpływów. Wówczas, chcąc zmodernizować tę byłą turecką prowincję, nowe władze zachęcały adeptów szkół medycznych, głównie z Pragi i Krakowa, do podjęcia kariery medycznej na Bałkanach. Na przykładzie wybranych sylwetek polskich lekarzy prezentuję genezę tego zjawiska, a także codzienną pracę medyków w kraju, w którym znaczny odsetek ludności stanowili zupełnie dla nich obcy kulturowo muzułmanie.

After the Congress of Berlin (1878), Bosnia and Herzegovina was in the Austro-Hungarian sphere of infl uence. Then, the new government in order to modernize the former Turkish province, encouraged medical school students, mainly from Prague and Cracow to take a medical career in the Balkans. Based on profi les of some Polish doctors, the genesis of this phenomenon, as well as their daily work in a country where a signifi cant percentage of the population, was of Muslim origin and culturally diff erent, is presented.
