The history of the Solidarity trade union is divided into four periods: until December 13, 1981, the time of underground activity (until the beginning of 1989), the breakthrough years (1989–91) and after 1991. The article discusses in detail the sources for the history of the union on in the Lublin Province, the state of research, the history of undertaking scientific work in this area, to move on to presenting the structures of “Solidarity” farmers in the region and the history of their development by the communist political police.

Historia związku zawodowego „Solidarność” dzieli się na cztery okresy: do 13 grudnia 1981 r., czas działalności podziemnej (do początku 1989 r.), lata przełomu (1989–1991) oraz po 1991 r. Artykuł szczegółowo omawia źródła do dziejów związku na terenie województwa lubelskiego, stan badań, dzieje podejmowania prac naukowych w tym zakresie, by przejść do przedstawienia struktur „Solidarności” rolników w regionie i historii ich rozpracowania przez komunistyczną policję polityczną.

In the times of the Polish People’s Republic, the Church was the only independent area of public life. It was carrying out its basic mission, the aim of which was to hand over the deposit of faith and at the same time it became the power supporting and focusing the freedom aspirations of the Polish people. With full openness, the Church faced this task in the 80s of the last century. The new forms of pastoral ministry were becoming the sign of the times then. One of them was the pastoral care for individual farmers directed to all the inhab-itants of villages but it was undertaken most fully by the people connected with Solidarity. Thanks to the sup-port of the Church, the independent areas were maintained in the villages, including the Solidarity of Individu-al Farmers. This historic challenge, to a large extent, was taken within the Lublin Diocese.

W okresie PRL Kościół pozostawał jedyną niezależną przestrzenią życia publicznego. Wypełniał swoją pod-stawową misję, sprowadzającą się do przekazywania depozytu wiary, a równocześnie stał się siłą wspierającą i skupiającą dążenia wolnościowe Polaków. Z pełną otwartością, przed tym zadaniem, stanął w dekadzie lat 80. ubiegłego wieku. Znakiem czasu stawały się wówczas nowe formy duszpasterstwa. Jednym z nich było się duszpasterstwo rolników, skierowane ku wszystkim mieszkańcom wsi, ale najpełniej podjęte przez osoby związane z Solidarnością. Dzięki temu wsparciu Kościoła na wsi utrzymane zostały obszary niezależne, w tym Solidarność Rolników Indywidualnych. To historyczne wyzwanie w znakomitym zakresie zostało podjęte na terenie diecezji lubelskiej.
