Komputery oraz internet wypierają tradycyjny dotąd model kształcenia. Wzrasta znaczenie globalnej sieci jako źródła informacji, na podstawie której podejmuje się ważne decyzje. W edukacji efektem zmian jest nowy model nauczania/uczenia się dopasowany do nowych warunków i do nowych potrzeb. Jednym z podstawowych narzędzi edukacyjnych społeczeństwa informacyjnego staje się zdalne nauczanie.
