"Don Kichot" Miguela Cervantesa — estetyka i ukształtowanie graficzne polskich edycji

The first Polish edition of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha was published in 1781 in atranslation by Count Franciszek Podoski. By 2012, 64 editions in total were published in Poland (the last one that appeared as the survey was carried out is from 2009). In the article the author discusses the distribution of successive editions over time, the places of their publication, the institutions publishing them as well as the number of copies. Thanks to first-hand descriptions of avast majority of these editions (58), the author has been able to analyse them in terms of their typography and aesthetic values. She has analysed the types and decorations of the covers and bindings as well as the layout of the text and additional material. A detailed analysis has concerned the illustrations: their authors, techniques, place within the text. In addition, the author has examined the way in which the material form of the book was adapted to the content of the novel and its potential readers.

In the article there were analyzed the 94 libraries of state universities, dependent to 4 different min­istries. All institutions were divided into 10 groups according to the present profile — the libraries of: economic univeristies, medical univeristies, artistic univeristies, educational univeristies, en­vironmental and agricultural univeristies, technical univeristies, theological univeristies, military univeristies, physical education univeristies and universities. There were examined whether the organizational structure have been separated scientific information departments. There were comcom­pared the names of 77 scientific information departments discussed in the organizational structure, number of employees and the implementation of tasks. Comparative analysis showed considerable diversity in nomenclature (39 different names), and determine the average number of employees is 7.Among the tasks performed in the first place is provision of information services, followed by training activities and create, administer and testing databases. In addition, there is the relation­ship between the size and profile of the university and the activities undertaken by employees of scientific information.

The author has analysed conversations with the following graphic designers of books: Katarzyna Bogucka, Agata Dudek, Emilia Dziubak, Monika Hanulak, Marta Ignerska, Bartłomiej “Arobal” Kociemba, Marta Liszka, Aleksandra andDaniel Mizieliński, and Anna Niemierko. She discusses the views of young Polish illustrators on their own oeuvre and their motivation, situation of illustrated books on the Polish market and the significance of readers in the creation of illustrations. In addition, she tries to describe the generation of illustrators who made their debuts in the 21st century.
